Didn't JW Marriott's do USDA meat, at the New York steakhouse.

I think gourmet one, used to supply as well.

JW Marriott like El Gaucho offer USDA. Typically USDA Angus commands a higher price. I believe that is due to higher import tax. If you live in Thailand, buying 100 to 200 day aged Australian beef is a much better deal and tastes equally as good.

NY serves Japanese beef, USDA prime and Australian wagyu. Doubt you will leave unsatisfied- just get your mate to pay for it.

If that's MS4+ I'm Britney fucking Spears, can't even go with the Angus label when it's the typical colour of Thai beef and guaranteed to be shit. Goes without saying I have serious trust issues when it comes to what these jokers try to pass off as quality meat..

Not the way to buy quality US beef but it is there. Foodland here typically have fresh US beef but didn't this morning, Big C often has it and Central always has it. Will get pics next time at those places but we didn't go to them today.

I have bought several cuts of Pro Butcher beef at Makro and they are all shite. Make a decent stew though.

Also they no doubt inject water in several of their cuts.

^No doubt. I don't know why Thai beef is typically that colour, maybe it's the breed or what they're fed or maybe it's because of something like water injection. Don't know don't care because I'll never buy it.

The price per kg is on 2 of them, can't recall what the other cost but it was higher than what entry-level imported beef costs.

Not T bone but i was in a Makro the other day and they had a Australian Thailand beef display. Took a couple of shots of the packs and on closer examination it looked awful.

^I can't believe they can legally advertise that as MS4+ beef, or that anyone would buy beef that looked like that regardless of what's written on the pack. That is 100% guaranteed to be terrible eating. And yeah, that ain't Wagyu either.

Edit to add, didn't notice that one of those "steaks" is actually labelled as being Dairy Beef with what looks to be a couple of Fresian represented on the packaging. They're fantastic dairy cows, as are Jersey's, but they are not bred for eating hence being called dairy cows!

Crazy. None of that beef above is good for anything other than a long day of simmering to make stew. It is amazing they can label and market it as Wagyu. It's like knock off beef like a Louis Vuitton purse.

    The Breed

The so-called “Thai wagyu” is a crossbreed between Australian or Japanese wagyu and Charolais, Brahman or Holstein cattle. “I’m the one who named it ‘Thai wagyu,’” says Thanabodee Ratchana, the man behind Best Country Beef butcher shop (see below). “About six years ago, some big people in Surin happened to import a wagyu bull. They let Suranari University keep its sperm and distribute it to local farmers. From there on, the wagyu-cross cattle has spread to many more farms in Buriram, Mukdahan, Nakhon Ratchasima and throughout Isaan.”

    The Meat

The wagyu genes result in higher fat content in between the meat, which makes it super succulent and tender. The Thai cattle, meanwhile, contribute to increased meat fibers. Thanabodee says, “For me a Holstein-cross is the best as its meat carries the highest fat. Holstein is a native, straight-blood that can thrive very well here, unlike Charolais and Brahman which are already crossbreeds.” However, Phanuphon “Black” Bulsuwan, chef-proprietor of Chiang Mai’s Blackitch restaurant and the guy behind Krbb butchery in Bangkok (see below), says these local crossbreeds still can’t compare with full-blood wagyu. “I haven’t seen any Thai wagyu with an A5 score, not even an A3 actually. Most of them fall in the B range,” he says.

“I’m the one who named it ‘Thai wagyu,’” says Thanabodee Ratchana
    That was nice of him.

To take the name of the best product in the world.

Then plaster it all over over their marketing and advertizing.

At least he was honest enough to qualify it with the word 'Thai' in front.

Honest is not entirely the correct adjective.

Up here in Isaaan there are now regular weekend promotions in supermarket and mall car parks offering 'Wagyu' beef.

I have looked once and bought nothing and never will but obviously they must be selling to some otherwise these promotions would not exist.

I guess if you say it often enough people will believe it to be true.

Also I have noticed the opening of a couple of 'Max' Beef restaurants.
No idea how successful they have been but there is obviously a drive on to get Thais consuming beef

Fair point, more so if they've never seen or tried real Wagyu before, or any other steak that was nice for that matter! Not a good way to introduce locals to eating beef more often, selling them strips of leather and telling them it's Wagyu...

If you get the chance, you should try Korean Hanwoo (any half-decent Korean BBQ place will have it in Thailand).

Why Korean Hanwoo beef might be the best meat on earth

Couple of pics of some nice looking meat seen today, the colours in the phone-pics don't do justice but they looked superb. 3k a key so that's about 90 USD, or 40 bucks a pound. What's the going price for meat of this grade in America right now?

    Hw,
Depends in the store. But Costco charges about $24 a lb for their top Ribeye USDA beef. Stores like Safeway can vary based on sales but $20 to $30 a lb.

That beef looks extremely good. I have come to terms with myself here that it will always be more expensive here so if you like it, you buy it when you see it.
