Wow, all this food makes me hungry!
Lunch today
Healthy lunch that Mizz M!
^Trying to be anyway, i just realized I only have four toes in the pic.
You wasn't born in Tasmania or Wales by any chance?
My usual Isaan lunch is larb moo... I love the stuff and after a lot of trial and error the vendor I use has the 'petness' just right for me.
He'd run out today, so I went for 'tap' something or other and assumed the same petness as he knows I like... 'pet nit noi!'
So much chilli it early blew me head off... the wife was happy though.
^ that is my favourite, sweet liver.
tap wan or something similar I think...
I didn't get the sweetness, just the chilli!
yep Tab Hwan
One word Mendip - YUM
Today we headed out to lunch at the Plara Café in Nonthaburi. On Ratchapruek Road in a strip mall type plaza. Not well marked. You won’t find it unless you know where it is. A small café started by, I think, two sisters. Possibly a Mom Daughter operation. I’m unsure. The food is excellent. Large servings cheap.
We’ve eaten there several times in the past. It is out of the way so not a frequented café. But, always worth the trip. The place was packed as usual.
Started with two plates of Som Tum. A plate of typical Thai Som Tum with sticky rice and a plate of Blue Crab Som Tum. Large crabs nestled in a bed of Som Tum. Not the small/tiny crabs you get in typical Thai Som Tum. Tod Mun Chicken Wings – an interesting mix of chicken wings cooked with Tod Mun sauce. I thought the taste would be bad. Tod Mun Pla fish cake taste on chicken? But they prepared it so it was mild and it blended surprising well. Then or with a soup of beef and vegetables. Also a plate of beef strips and sauce.

Yeah Bowie, it would be 'yum', but it was just way too hot for me to enjoy, or even eat.
I can eat and enjoy just about any Isaan food, but one of my pet hates () is when an otherwise nice meal is made just too hot for me to eat. I get no enjoyment from it then and don't bother going through the pain.
^ i must be a glutton for punishment, there's a Mo Yang place we go to and we always have Tab Hwan & the short rib soup and they both blow your face off but i love the stuff - 2-3 Changs eases the pain.
In this case, the "wan" in "tap wan" does not mean sweet, despite it using the same word as for sweet.
หวาน
ตับหวาน
As with any dish in Thailand, you can stipulate how spicy you want the dish, so just tell them you only want it a little spicy (then hope the cook follows your orders).
^ My standard is 'pet nit noi', and this guy makes me perfect pet nit noi larb moo. His pet nit noi sweet liver blew my head off.
I can't figure out why it has to be so difficult.
I've picked up some half decent offshore work in Norway over the next few months which should cover the year, which to be honest is fuk'n great news.
To celebrate my impending return to work with fellow hairy-arsed offshore contractors... I baked some chocolate cup cakes with me daughter!
The celebrations would have been somewhat raunchier back in the day, I can tell you...
The cup cakes cooling, straight from the oven.
And a big shout out to KW here... since his tip about adding a pinch of salt our cakes rise like a dream... every time!
The daughter is in charge of decoration.
There, lovely job. Not exactly lunch... but high tea I guess!
Looks great Mendip, just hope the companion ways are accommodating
^ I know... lock down hasn't been kind to me!
Still, I have three weeks to get trim...I hate turning up to a new job looking like a right fat b@@stad!
Leave it be, new gig so you'll be going in with the don't mess with me profile, sets the tone I think and sends the message that you won't be taking a turn in the barrel.
unless its cider
Yeah... and I'm too old and ugly to be asked to find the golden rivet!
^Or having your turn in the barrel
Good on you for picking up some work Mendip, it'll be good for your sanity!
Light lunch today, could have done with a few chips and baked beans..
Some routine government registration crap to take care of today so hit a local Duck Farm for lunch. Duck, sautéed vegetables, tod man goong, and a soup of pork and tofu.
Veggies and Tod Man Goong

Lunch
We tried a new Maori/Japanese fusion restaurant, Izakai, in Tauranga the other day . . . simply excellent food . . .
We had:
Hangi-style pork belly and watercress
Pork and Watercress pan-fried dumplings
Creamed Paua (Abalone) and Prawn Gyoza
Three Mizo Hapuka (fish)
Manuka wood smoked Kahawai (fish)
A very good fusion meal . . .
