That looks very nice Topper! What are the curly things?

Well, I must be doing something right because the wife plonked down a larb moo in front of me today, my favourite.

This sort of thing always makes me a bit nervous... I've checked the calendar and there's no Birthdays today but something must be afoot.

There's no such thing as a free favourite lunch...

Couple of good dishes from Topper and our resident passport expert, let's drag things back to a more normal TD level with a frozen butter chicken and chips

I'd say they're curly fries which are quite common in 'da PI.

^Potatoes might be the latest shortage crisis over there after onions recently reached the same price as gold

I'll bet you a green they're spuds, and await Topper's reply.

Hey Mendy, just curious and an honest question no hidden agenda, do you eat anything with chili's? I've noticed that none of your Thai dishes look like what most eat here. The Larb Moo looks like ground pork with Veggies as a side

I know many foreigners do not eat spicey food here and many I know hate it which is surprising to me being it must be hard to make a dish excluding it.

^ I do eat chillies, no problem but I certainly don't like food anywhere near as spicy as the wife eats. I try one forkful of her food and that's the end of the meal for me.

Those little red bits in the larb moo were pieces of chilli. I usually ask for 'pet nitnoi' but seem to end up with anything between bland and something that nearly blows my head off.

Hahahaha. Good point. I eat extremely spicy food. In fact opposite of you, my wife can't eat the food she makes for me because she says PET MAK, same her sister. It's always funny at restaurants because they always assume the foreigner wont eat spicy food and when I say Pet Mak they always look at my wife for approval and then they all laugh.

    Cheers

^^ Something I find interesting about Thais is that they can generally eat very hot food with chilli heat but can't take mustard heat. I can't take the chilli but can eat a ham sandwich with a half inch smear of Coleman's English mustard no problem, but even a small smidgen of mustard will get the wife snorting like a horse.

If I'm bored I'll sometimes make the wife a sandwich and hide a bit of mustard inside. It really is funny to watch.

^ Bladdy hell, that could be it. I'd better jump in the shower tonight!

Yeah Valentines day is tomorrow. I have to say I am extremely happy my wife doesn't even acknowledge it. To us it's just another day which I appreciate immensely. In the states it's a whack holiday. People spend hundreds, sometimes thousands, with flowers, balloons, dinner and it's an expectation with most which is annoying as I always hated Valentines Day. It is nothing more than a consumer holiday to sell flowers, cards, balloons and gifts and BS.

My wife has tried some mustard in the US with horseradish. She said it wasn't bad but didn't understand what food it would work with.

However when we go have Sushi she stays away from Wasabi, says the stuff burns her nose.

The winner is.....no one, not even me. They're fried yam (sweet potatoes so HW is close) that are completely flavorless. However, after a sprinkle of salt, they do taste like salt.

^And you'd have posted that if the Cabal hadn't called and dragged you away from your keyboard on a clandestine mission being air-dropped into Northern China I suppose

Yam fries (curly or otherwise) is a new one on me, won't be in any hurry to try them after Topper's thoughts on how they taste though.

^ Yeah, I did have a busy afternoon yesterday!

My only experience of yams was when I lived in Kuantan in Malaysia. We used to go to this seafood restaurant and they had this dish called a 'yam basket' which was a yam filled with shrimps and stuff... maybe some soft shelled peeler crabs as well. I seem to remember it was really nice.
