Rookie error..you should have covered the drip pan in foil, it does look nice though (the bird, not the pan, the pan will be a bitch to clean). What did you coat the bird in, used motor oil?

We went to a buffet at the swankiest hotel in town today....completely underwhelming both in ambiance and food quality. On the bright side, beer was included in the price. Won't be back.

I hesitantly post this for fear of being accused of producing 'slop', yes, Stumpy I am on to you.

A simple ham with mashed potato and a few veggies. The gardener brought over some rice as without the wife 'in residence', the rice cooker has had a rare break from it's 24/7 duties.

I offered a range of mustards and even made up a cheese sauce... well, it is special day after all.

And yet the gardener smothered his ham with tomato ketchup. At least the daughter didn't follow suit or I mat have had a word.

And if you're wondering about our fancy cutlery...

Yes, a free Christmas green bauble if you know where this came from?

Mike, if you are anywhere near Korat try out 'Korat Chef'. That is where I got the ham from, it was great and and not expensive. I fact I think I'll pick one up every couple of weeks from now on to keep something healthier for snacks than that square, slimy ham from Makro.

^ my village shop used to cook their own hams, Wiltshire cured. I used to get 1lb a weeks for sandwiches and it was fantastic, the owner used to always over add on weight but he'd nick a slice and gobble it before he packed it - god i miss that ham, real home cured and cooked.

Aye, that was Baldy John's plate, he was there before us so he'd already eaten before us.

I had cross words with the wife this morning and a few hours later she plonked this 'Isaan soup' in front of me for lunch.

I'm not at all squeamish about food and like liver, can eat heart no problem but I'm not so keen on pig intestines and really don't like the blood cubes. I think I need to make up with her before tomorrow's lunch.

Yes I'm buying whole hams and slicing them up at home instead of buying XXX amount of grams from supermarket deli's these days too Mendip. Ham and cheese toasties or ham and salad samidges both taste better now.

Don't overestimate me Jeff... they say that you learn something new every day but I seem to have lost that ability and just repeatedly make the same mistakes.

But one thing I have learnt... a moody wife isn't conducive to getting a decent meal so I gave her one of my best smiles this morning and it seems to have done the trick. She's in much better humour today and plonked this in front of me for lunch.

I can't remember if she said it was chicken basil or pork basil, but either way it was very nice and a vast improvement on yesterday's pig intestine soup.

Left-over roast chook and cheddar with hot sauce toastie for lunch today, a tasty combo.

^^ I don't really know, to be honest. It looked a bit larbish, as HW mentioned.

I'm not even sure if it was chicken or pork, although I suspect pork. I don't like to ask too many questions while we're getting on so well!

Edit. That does look good HW!

We can get Kraft AND Hellman's mayonnaise in Korat now and I can never decide which one I like best. Of course Kraft has the advantage of coming in plastic jars that don't smash if you drop them on the kitchen floor.

^ I think you could be on to something here mate. And yeah, a fried egg on top would have been good.

Look, if I PM you the wife's number could you ask her to please stick an egg on it next time?

    Well....you can actually.
How 'bout a double smoked variety with a caramelized crusty outer goodness.
Just a thought and one option contradicting the ever so popular, yet hackneyed, boiled ham.

^^ I would say it was more basilly than your usual larb but to be honest I really don't know what I'm talking about when it comes to Thai food.

^ I don't think they stock them at Korat Chef, Jeff!
