^^ Made you look
DD is the man about breadmaking BTW. I think I should have said 4.5" (going by DD's loaf pans) instead of 4" BTW. Not gonna go back and edit because we all make mistakes.
4.5" will give you a 114.3mm slice of bread.

Black diamonds? I shit 'em.
7/11 ham-cheese toasties are good when sober, so it goes without saying they're like foods from the Gods when pissed up or hungover.
Back in the day they came wrapped in clingfilm and 7/11 had a station with sauces and chopped onions. you could load them up before handing them over to be toasted.
Those were the days, bouncing into 7/11 at 3am doing the 'Bushwhackers March' chanting "ham and cheese, ham and cheese, ham and cheese"

Ravenous savage.
There are no kebab stalls in Songkhla. It's probably for the best.
I hate the fact that I have so much spare time I was even considering this... and I hate even more that I was actually looking forward to doing it.
But that's living in Korat for you... it's good to occasionally find something worthwhile to spend your time on.
It would have been a bit more 'normal' if my daughter could have joined me but she was hard at work doing her online lessons. When we do this kind of stuff together and get funny looks I just roll my eyes and shrug my shoulders... the indulgent dad.
But when I'm alone and get funny looks - and I did - people must just think I'm weird.
But anyway, I made up a 120mm bread template from a cereal box and tested it on a loaf of Farmhouse wholemeal before I left for Makro. I think that 120mm is the absolute minimum size to use... it fits snugly into the Breville toastie maker but doesn't take into account any curvature caused by the filling, or of the diagonal ridge that separates the two halves of the toastie (hats off to Bogon). I think that 130mm would be better to be honest.
Clearly the Farmhouse bread is woefully small for a toastie.
When I arrived at the bakery section in Makro I first tested a French stick to get my eye in.
As expected, it was way too small and only a fool would attempt to use this for a toastie.
I then tried the Aro wholemeal bread that I like... it has nuts and stuff sprinkled on the crust.
This was wide enough (in the centre of the loaf) but no-where near tall enough. It's not at all the square-shape you need for toasties and the slice size tapers off at each end anyway. You probably only get maybe a third of the slices at full size. This was clearly also unsuitable for my needs.
I moved on to another Aro wholemeal bread which looked promising at first. This was sold in half loaves and I've never noticed it before. It was certainly tall enough, but no-where near wide enough. It seemed impossible to get both the desired width and height.
Then I struck gold... the Aro sliced loaf that I think Bogon recommended. A good regular square shape that's maintained throughout the length of the loaf.
First I considered the wholemeal version. This probably just about achieved the desired 120mm dimensions.
And then I looked at the white version. This seemed to have slighter bigger slices than the wholemeal version, and so this was the one I eventually went for. I think that you're excused eating white bread when it's in a toastie anyway.
So, I'm all set for Friday night.
One thing that was kind of annoying... when I got back home I realised that the recipe cards Breville provided are exactly 120mm square. I hadn't needed to make up the cardboard template as it seems Breville are way ahead of me. Obviously this has been an issue before.
I hope you remembered to get the cheese.
I hate the fact that now I'm questioning my choice of bread for the toasties. They're not sticking together enough...
I'm sure it tasted good...
Thanks Bogon, that was the one I was recommending at Makro, but I do not shop there enough to know the name.
^^ Please don't take this the wrong way... but I'm a bit nervous about clicking on links from untrusted sources
But you were spot on! Green owed.
^^ No probs. The Macro bread is a good size, but a bit too dry after toasting. I don't miss much from the UK and can get most things I need here, but really miss decent readily available fresh bread.
Damn it you bastards are high jacking my thread. This is supposed to be about drunk food you have at the pub or at home that you made while on the piss. This has become a technical thread about toasting sandwiches something a damn frying pan does perfectly well. You do not need some overpriced contraption to make what is essentially a grilled cheese sandwich. Slap some butter on two sides add some cheese and whatever else and grill the fucker in a fry pan. Simple.
Now can we get back to drunk food?
Thanks.
God-damn it fuck off to the appropriate thread.
toasts first? Some new fangled witchering!
^^ I asked why Americans call lightly fried cheese sandwiches grilled and never got a satisfactory reply.
Well it's a bit of a dilemma snubbie- when drunk, do you call out for dwunk food, or cook it at home? TBH, I normally have some doggie bag or leftovers from a previous delivery in the fridge- and of course a microwave. EZ. Tomorrows brunch will be reheated lamb rogan josh, with 'arfa garlic nan.
Mendip, if you have mayo, spread that on the outside of the sandwich rather than butter. It's non-stick and gives a crispier coat to the sandwich.
I fooking hate those sandwich makers...they're a right bitch to clean without scraping off the "non-stick" coating. A frying pan works tons better.
I can't wait to see Friday's results!
