I had never heard this story...

In 1847 the Choctaw Nation responded to a plea for help from a country far away across the ocean, by sending $710* to aid the victims of the Great Irish Famine. This immense act of human generosity, from one impoverished people to another over 150 years ago, is a beautiful, touching moment that should never be forgotten in the many volumes of untold history.

“I am half-blind, but when I close my eyes the faces of the dead come to me through the blackness. We have walked the trail of tears. The Irish people walk it now. We can help them as we could not help ourselves. Our help will be like an arrow shot through time. It will land many winters from now to wait as a blessing for our unborn generations”…. The Long March.

I learned about that in school. This is the monument in Cork to the Choctaw people. It's bloody ugly, imo, and it's new but I remember being told in school that when the Irish people were starving even the Red Indians tried to help, everyone tried to help except the English landowners and government who just stole all the food and left the people to die.

Now this, gaybob, is the part they never teach you in the UK. They teach you about the famine, and the kids, thus adult, never stop to wonder "well what happened to all the fish in the sea and rivers, the corn, the barley, the sheep, cows, pigs, deer, the pheasants and chickens, the carrots, the EVERYTHING ELSE that wasn't a potato. Where did that go? "

To England to be consumed or sold, with the army the enforcers... as usual.

No onions though. They were all in Lyon.

Aligned in a circle, the look is imperfect, bends and creases in one feather distinguishing it from its next metallic counterpart. The feathers stand strong, made from steel and bound together with more than 20,000 welds. But they also give off a sense of fragility, a feeling that a strong breeze could topple them at any moment.

“This monument represents this time of great instability,” Pentek explained last March when I talked to him via Skype. “But it also represents this great moment of compassion, strength and unity.”
