    COuntry cookin' ~ fried Okra in Corn meal

    Eat yer heart out BlackGang:
    For you folks that don;t know what okra is you may ind you have another name for it.
    Okra:


    Rinse in cool water & dry, then slice it up like n the picture thicker, thinner it's really up to your preference but if you've never had it this works for me:
    Take drop the sliced pieces into a bit of flour and coat them nice and even:


    This'll help the egg & milk mixture stick to the okra,

    remove the okra with a fork or somethng that will get the okra and no extra flour out Dump them all in an egg-milk mixture Here is one egg and maybe a fat Tblsp of milk, I added some fresh ground pepper, chili flakes are good too


    Get 'em coated nice & even-like using that fork again remove the coated veggies leaving behind as much as you can of the egg-milk (some folks'll dup the whole mess in to the cornmeal and that's perfectly Ok you get more of a okra hush-puppy/fritter then but it can tasty.
    Drop em all in enough cornmeal to coat nice and thick-like


    Get a pan of med-hot oil ready, this can be bacon drippings if you like I prefer to use vegetable oil myself. you don;t want it too hot they should brown up nicely in about 7 - 10 minutes. The Okara's gonna try and stick together so work it a bit til it's no longer sticky or you'll end up with that fritter anyway... Like I said some like it like that..

    Fry this turning or tossing until you get the desired color brown.
    This is how I like mine:


    Serve and eat! salt & pepper, splash on some Tobasco if you like or that mild Louisiana Pepper sauce.

    Damn, I am sure hungry now! BTW, I like my okra long and not cut up. I think the taste is better preserved.

    Thailand has some pretty good okra!

    I always thought it was nasty.

    I can't stand the slimy shit boiled, but cut either long ways or as shown and fried coated with meal kinda takes the buffalo fuk stuff away.

    Well fuk, When I open this thread there was a banner on top "FOOD IMAGE" and had a pic of an Artichoke, jesus christ on a popsicle stick, I give my front seat in hell for a half dozen of then things, just like the ones we used to buy on our way thru Carmel country when we be on a ride down to Monterey, camp and boil em up and dip the leaves in Best Foods Real Mayofuckinaise.
    Guys used to think I was nuts to pack some cookin gear on my scoot,,, shit.

    We get them here occasionally, expensive as hell though.

    For that matter, what is cornmeal. Is it like grits?
    Does it say cornmeal on the packet?

    ^I've seen corn flour but not corn meal for cornbread.
    And scrapple should be easy here with all the other great pork products.
    Ethnic cooking from the southeast USA probably is a low volume thing.

    Buy it in Tops or Rim Ping up here it says "Polenta" or cornmeal on it, it's like grits. Grits are usually from Hominy and slightly coarser grind, You can cook it just like grits if you like; in a mush (polenta)i like to add some jalapenos or onions let it set in a loaf pan over night slice it, fry it Salt & Pepper...

    As I mentioned somewhere before, cornmeal is readily available in the moo-ban, 7-10bt/kg, it's used for animal feeding. The stuff I get here needs to be sieved to get the course bits out, not much, maybe 3-5%.

    I have an amusing true story about Okra, or as Kingwilly correctly posted. Ladies Finger, as it is otherwise known.

    In the late 1980's, I was living with a very attractive divorcee who's father had a greengrocery business.

    He gave us some "ladies fingers", as he called them to try for the first time as they were a relatively new vegetable in the U.K.

    I forget how we cooked them, but about a week later when in London shopping, I bought the lady her very first viabrator from an Ann Summers sex shop.The viabrator was coincidentally named, Ladies Finger.

    After spending a lustful, battery fuelled Saturday night with her, her parents came round for Sunday lunch and whilst eating, her dad casually enquired, "how was the ladies finger?"

    We both nearly choked on our food before realising that he was talking about the okra from the week before and not the plastic pussy rocket!!
