Mendip, can we narrow it down to one of the many Sand Pits?
Suez canal would be my guess for mendip
Port Said Road, driven down many times, always interesting, (until you get to Port Said - what a shithouse!) was on a couple of towed rigs through there many years ago, then they built the bridge and large transporters became cheaper and more economical than paying the vast fees they charge for going through the canal.
^ We were working in the Nile Delta, in and out of Damietta at the time.
I believe that during the last oil downturn, the price of fuel was low enough to make it economical for ships to sail round the horn of Africa rather than pay the canal fees.
It was around one million USD 20 years ago to transit the canal due to weight and more so size of a rig, not many rigs go through now, after they built the "Japanese friendship bridge" Jackups could no longer pass under the bridge as legs too high, proffered mode in recent years has been heavy lift carriers, more cost effective & a lot quicker than towing or going under own steam in the odd instances where rig is capable.
The cost of oil never really came into the costings, it was more about lost days/dayrate wasted when the rig was at sea, at ~200,000 USD a day years back didn't take long to get the money back, same rigs are going for 70k a day now.
Thanks, y-dee. I'll forfeit my turn as I'm phone only at the moment.
I have an idea . . . wouldn't it be great if we finished one location guess before we post another pic? Just a thought . . .
