    Chess V Go

I have recently started playing the centurys old Chinese board game GO. For those who don't know, the aim of the game is to gain as much of the board as possible by surrounding your opponents pieces (capturing and not killing ) with your own pieces. When there is no longer anymore room for said pieces, this then leads to negotiation by both players to see who "wins".

As i said, am very new to the game and its completely different method of winning compared to chess. The problem i have is although i realise that i am new to Go, I struggle with the way it is played. I mostly play Go online, and when i comment (usually after being beaten) to my opponent the response is "you are thinking like a westerner" or "you are thinking like a chess player", Cheeky buggers!
Does anyone on TD play Go?, and if so have you had this problem?
Im sorry if this is a boring thread but it would like to know if i am the only one this has occured to.

It all depends on what sort of brain you have. I am a good chess player having played it for over fifty years. I love the game and still study it spending at least thirty minutes every day at it. For some reason I am totally useless at draughts/checkers and have been told that, although my powers of strategy/ reasoning are higher than average, my brain cannot deal well with spatial analysis. This is also the case for games which are limited in scope by having relatively few types of move.

I know the rules of Thai chess, Makruk, and have tried to watch it being played on the streets. There is, however, no substitute for actually playing the game and the opportunity for me to play it has never arisen.

I have looked at Go but know that nobody would play me and my attempts to learn it have been half-hearted in consequence. I am sure I would be very good at Makruk and equally sure that I'd be poor at Go.

I think this might explain the "thinking like a westerner" thing that you mention. You may well be similar to me. I need great complexity to fire my brain and I'm hopeless doing things which, on the face of it, are simpler. It's as though my brain is being snobbish and refuses to concentrate on things which it regards as unworthy. I'd love to be able to play draughts well but I just can't.

Thanks for the great reply can123, I will have a look at Makruk and try a few games. Your probably right about the spatial analysis, as when i ws trying to learn to play the guitar (very badly ) this was mentioned by a tutor. I was asked to try the piano instead which i found to be much easier. And have been subjecting anyone within earshot my twinkly finger skills ever since. I am also a terrible draughts player and have come to the conclusion that it is the work of the devil.

Im sure that there are websites available for games of Makruk against others. I shall have a look.

    Cheers

Chess is weighted wrong , ie with 2 player of similar strength - the boring safety first gay will invariably beat the player who tries imagination and flair .
I stopped playing online , as most players are so afraid of losing you can feel thier fear .
A speculative sacrifice? they would shit thier pants just thinking about it .They seldom attack the king , they just want material , and thus push for your blunders rather than doing anything clever or interesting.
And cheating using progs , disconnecting when losing , making thier comp lag etc is rife .

how is Go for online cheating ?

"you are thinking like a westerner" or "you are thinking like a chess player"
sounds like a lame cliche they trot out

Your right, nearly everytime the game (finally ) goes my way the same events occur as you say. Go is different as if the game is tied then the players negotiate a win/lose or draw, and as of yet i have been thrashed in every game so im not sure what the proceedure is.

One thing i was told was that during the vietnam war (American war all depending on your outlook on it was ) that the Amearican generals were using chess techniques such as hunt and kill and chase down highly ranking officers, while the VC were using Go techniques such as keep close to the enemy, and play the long game through taking (or ) planting a few vc (pieces) in certain useful and strong areas.
I dont know how much truth is in this theory, but it does validate the differences between the games in real life ( the theatre of war )

I think i will just have a week of connect 4, for my sanity.

I am able to guarantee that I would not lose online as I have powerful chess engines available on my computers but I am not prepared to cheat. I love chess and delight in interesting positions. I don't give a damn if I win or lose as my enjoyment is derived from the beauty of the game. I was a strong player when I was young as I was able to concentrate fully for far longer periods than I am able to now.

I can recommend the following site for its daily problem :

Chessgames.com: Chess Games Database & Community

I'm sure it would be worth subscribing to as the subscriptions are low for such a class site. I simply don't have the free time to use it.

The vast majority of players would find Arena more than good enough for them. It's free and can be found at :

Arena Chess GUI 3.0 - Welcome to Arena

I appreciate that the OP is seeking information on Go so these sites may be useful :

Go Game ? Play Go Online

About twenty years ago, when I first became interested in Makruk, I made contact with a guy from Holland, Hans Boadlaender, who was setting up a site which was to deal with the game. I had hoped to be able to provide him with some annotated games but I failed. Nobody in Thailand had the least idea of what I was talking about.

I am certain that this site was originally his :

    Makruk: Thai Chess
