The other beaches are small and not pleasant for swimming.Originally Posted by dirtydog
I agree with CM that the beach is sometimes very dirty.
These pics from May09.
A very low tide.
Was considering a few days away either Koh Chang, Samet or this one.
Now it's a 2 horse race.
A few of my mates went to Samet to celebrate the new year. They drove back to Bangkok on the day of the 31st after witnessing 2 dudes openly buggering each other on the beach and lots of other dudes constantly showing their affection for each other all the bloody time.
I think your horse race has a winner.

I am planning to go again but will be watching the wind and the tides!
went to samet over new year, 3rd time ive been, loved it! koh changs full up with ruskies at the mo apparently, im off down that way on the 16th, second home is the elephant isle........
Russkie season on Koh Chang right now? So, plenty of Adidas sweat suits being shown off as the height of fashion?
How did they find out about KC?
ketamine-only fools and horses
Took a trip over to Koh Mak last year. Fantastic beach and great rooms at a resort called monkey island. Let me see if i have a pic.
Arh no, sorry. The pics are on my external and I can't be arsed to plug it in.
I was last on Ko Si Chang in 2004, probably around early February. The beaches were all clean at that time, although I do recall seeing filthy beaches on other trips.
Ignoring the beaches, it is actually quite a cute little island. The Chinese temple overlooking the bay is a worthwhile hike, with a great view. The Buddha statue in the middle of the island is a bit more boring... don't bother walking to this one... firstly we could never find the street that turned off to it, and secondly, it turned out to be a long winding road in any event.
I'm not sure if it is still there, but there was also an old building referred to as "Dracula's Castle"... something very out of the ordinary.
We got some great photos of the beach next to the old Royal boat pier (near the University). I'll post them up if I find them, as they look like your typical tropical holiday shots... no pollution etc.
One word of warning when swimming though... I've found out the hard way that there are lots of sea urchins around the island. There can at times also be quite a bit of glass mixed into the sand. Not really an ideal island for swimming. I haven't been, but others have said the better places for swimming and snorkelling are some of the smaller neighbouring islands.
In response to one of the earlier posts on this thread, regarding the sailors that used to come onto the island... my dad was one. I lived in Bangkok while he worked at sea and we used to stay on the island each time his ship anchored around Ko Si Chang. When the sailors were in, the town would transform itself and take on a real party atmosphere. However, the island also used to harbour a lot of smugglers who would sneak onto the anchored ships at night in order to steal whatever they could get their hands on... I assume that's still the case today?
These snaps are from a day trip we went on a couple of years ago.
This is the view from the Chinese temple on the hill, overlooking the town & arrival pier below.
We walked from the pier up to the temple. From there, we went on a tour via one of these. Cost was around 250 baht for the driver to drive us around the island. There were lots of these available at the pier, but we wanted to stretch our legs and scope the scene first.
Next stop was this little park. We didn't hike around much here, on hind sight I wished we would have.
Next stop was the old palace grounds. Interesting old buildings and vibe/history of the place. Apparently Koh Si Chang was a kind of royal health retreat at one time.
Overlooking the sea channel.
The aforementioned Dracula's castle.
Overall, a nice little day trip. A pleasant vibe to the place, reminded me of some of the first travels I had in Thailand 10 years ago, when things were not so crowded, developed, expensive and overrun with Russians.
