Thai Ridgebacks make loyal, loving family pets. They are naturally protective of their home and family

    Bingo!

Beautiful looking dogs - the only thing that has stopped me from getting one is that wiki says they aren't for the novice dog owner, and they can get back problems linked to their ridge. But, my Mrs. mate has got one - it's old now, but what a lovely hound. Really affectionate but not sloppy and you should see the dog too. All joking aside I'm really tempted to get one.

Wouldn't be without my Bangkaews. You will never have any intruders if you have one of these.

I've got three Thai mongrels which I had as puppies from a local temple. They're good as gold with anyone they know, but will bark like crazy at anyone who's a stranger. They've got a bit of ridgeback in them from the look of the pictures earlier in the thread. They also do a good job of keeping away all smaller animals. They've killed rats, lizards, birds and one time a squirrel which was dumb enough to get on their radar.
The sleep of reason brings forth monsters.

Correct. Some scumbag tried to poison my dog a few years back. Luckily the dog had not eaten the meat w/ rat poison that was thrown over the fence; probably still smelled of the guy that prepared it..

Another thing to consider when owning a dog is correct training and owning a breed that won't annoy your neighbours due to yapping 24/7, like these stupid "fashionable" toy breeds that are popular now. If the dog barks all the time, you'll never know when something really is amiss..

One caution about "pure" Bred dogs, this can mean inbreeding and a host of very expensive problems. Most of the pure types on here have a host of problems. Big dogs tend to suffer more. Or so I believe.

    Absolutely.

Have a pure-bred Bangkaew and he's about the hardest dog I've ever had to train. Very stubborn and won't come if he's called unless he 'feels' like it but the best dog I've ever had w/regard to protecting the property.

If you want a pure-bred dog in Thailand, you have to do your due-diligence- there are breeders who have imported dogs from the US, Canada, Europe, etc and have proper paperwork and pedigrees showing hip and eye clearances going back 5 generations (while this isn't a guarantee of good health it's definitely a better chance of it) but there are breeders with fake paperwork as well- you have to contact the original breeders in their home country and ask for confirmation that they actually exported the sire and dame and confirm (with photographs if possible) that the puppy you're getting is what you're paying for (and be prepared to shell out at least 25K, and often more than that).

    ^

It's REALLY hard to find a good Dalmation- inbreeding has practically killed off the breed, but there are a few good breeders out there.
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.
