    Feral Dog Bahvior

I have to deal with dogs a lot because I run and bicycle so much. So far, no problems.

However, I've made one curious observation. On Saipan the feral dogs would form big packs and run all over the place together. But I haven't noticed that pack-forming behavior here in Korat and I wonder why. I sometimes see a pair of dogs on the prowl, but never a pack.

I thought it might be because packs only get formed when the loose dog population hits some sort of critical mass.

    Any other ideas?

I saw the pack mentality in Bangkok, lots of dogs would gather in groups in the same place usually late at night. they tended to be excitable and noisy.
Mostly located in and around Nana Plaza and places like that

But seriously, there were often 30-40 dogs in the small soi outside a condo i rented in Pathum Thani. During the day they would never get together in groups but at night it was risky walking down that soi. I would always carry a stick or something. The noise they made was unbelievable, howling for hours on end. Fortunatley the security guard had a catapult and he fired stones at them motivated by me giving him free beers as encouragement.
It was quite horrible knowing that you had to walk the "gaunlet" of these animals just to stroll to the 7 -11.
If i had know about the anti-freeze thing then i would have done them all in

If it's any thing like around here, the dogs probably are'nt feral and probably belong to some house or farm. Most places around here have at least a couple of dog's. They tend to form little packs and do wander around quite a bit. Having at least one big dog is a bouns as it keeps the other dogs away from the farm/house

Same here, most dogs 'belong' to someone.
They have some fav places on the edge of the village (one of them curiously in front of the local karaoke/brothel) where they gather and indulge in the usual mischief, very much like the local youth do early evening, or myself later in the night.

There is a pack up the road from me "owned" by some loner. You should hear the noise when he comes home, sounds like something out of the African night! I think he just stands on his porch and hurls whatever leftovers he has left into his yard.

I had a big Thai dog in my house - a well fed ridgeback - and couldn't work out why he was so scared of them (they are a mixed bunch of "Benjie" types)

One day I caught them getting stuck into my dog. One on the head, one on the tail, a third into his soft stomach and a couple more as standby.

Pure pack mentality. I really should thin their ranks out.

I hate the bloody mongrels and chased one down on the mrs wave pissed one night, ending up running it over.

    Very satisfying.

Suprisingly they are shit scared of my Labrador bitch though!

My old ridgeback used to chase only one motorcy that went by my house. The loner. One day my dog mysteriously disappeared and now my Lab does the same thing.

Soi dogs that are NOT taken care of by their owners should gotten rid of, or at least fixed so there won't be any more after them.

Unfortunately, they are not always safe to eat.
But there has been a lively crossborder trade to Laos and Combodia - they need cheap meat.

That's well known Stroller, but the fact remains that it's the owners do not take care of their own dogs. This is the problem and this is what should be addressed.

and thats it in a nutshell isn't it?

much the same as deliquent youths who congregated outside shops or malls and cause trouble out of boredom and the heightened sense of bravado they gain from numbers....

They should round up all the strays and if no one claims them in a certain length of time, put them to sleep. The monks have to be getting tired of all the mutts people throw away all the time. Wasn't it just last year that a kid was attacked in a Wat by the soi dogs dumped there. Just absolute stupidity on the parts of Thais to dump their trash/dogs/cats for others to take care of. Get a puppy and when it's big just let it go free or dump it somewhere. Mangy frickin things are a health hazard.

    Dogs at night

Interesting how the same dogs by day seem docile and harmless, while at night they turn into thugs

A dog barked at me and started to chase me last night as I was push-biking down to the pub. I barked back even louder and it nearly shat itself. By the time it remembered it was supposed to be chasing me, I was long gone.

I just hope that it's never one of your children or even yourself that is attacked by these ferrel frickin things. Instead oif making laws to do away with advertising alcahol, why not make laws that get these socalled PETS off the street. If they belong to someone, then THEY should take care of them and not expect the monks or anyone else to.

This is funny but true. If you get a chance, watch "The Dog Whisperer" on UBC. This guy knows animal and people behavior really well. Dogs are pack animals and are always looking for guidance from the alpha male. If you become the alpha male you can be in charge and they won't bother you.

When I do my daily I always take time to let new dogs know that I'm in charge, not them. You need to be calm and assertive and not back down. When I first moved here and started running I had all sorts of dogs barking and exhibiting other aggressive behavior. Now my morning run is quite peaceful. No barking, no aggression.

Now, if I could only learn to deal with humans.
