This is the biggest moth in the world, well not actually this one as it is only about 17cm, think it's a male moth, the females grow a lot bigger, ie 25cm to 30cm, its actually called Attacus Atlas Moth so I assume whoever first caught one and named it was attacked by it.
These only live as a moth for a week or 2 before they die of starvation due to having no mouth, pretty sure the Thais don't eat them and they seem a pretty good reason to get insect screens as you wouldn't want these things flying at your light bulbs in the kitchen whilst cooking a nice steak and chips, infact it would probably be quite scary waking up in the dark with one of them sitting on the end of your nose.
Next I shall do some photos of the smaller butterflies I have.
Thai Butterflies Main Page.
Note the coloration that makes it look like he has eyes on his wings.
They are not tame just crap at flying.
