    Snakes alive! What was it?

Went to cut the lawn yesterday afternoon and saw this in the grass.I went to pick it up as I thought it was a stick.

The previous day I was saying to my wife ,oh we haven't had many snakes this wet season in the garden have we.Last year we had several cobras but this is something different. The head looked more like an eel. The Thai neighbours said it was poisonous and I wanted to mow the grass,so it had to go.It was only about 70cm long and was not worth giving to the brother in law to make Tom Yum.May it rest in pieces.

    makes sense.
I do wonder what Thais know about snakes.
seem to think think they are all dangerous.

Nothing wrong with that, i haven't seen enough of them to have a clue and treat them all as possible killers.

I've never ever heard of a Thai saying that a snake wasn't anything but deadly.

    here's a sunbeam snake.

    Xenopeltis unicolor (Sunbeam Snake)
    Thai: Ngoo Säng Atit

Length: The male measures up to 92 cm, the female up to 114 cm.

Occurrence: Can be met in the whole of Thailand.

    Behaviour/habitat:
The snake is active at twilight and is nocturnally active. During the day, they like to hide themselves under rotting leaves and in compost and rubbish heaps. They eat frogs, lizards, other snakes and small rodents. They snake their tail is a warning if aggravated but do not generally bite.

    Danger: A harmless non-poisonous snake

    I know.
I've looked through all the pics of snake types in and around the Chiangmai area and haven't found one that looks like that.

seems you chopped the rarest snake in thailand into a million pieces.

On a more sobering note, one of the deadliest craits in Thailand lives is common in the Doi Sakhet and San Kampeng areas.
They can kill and often do.

    Bad news.

I'm redding you for killing it, Scoot. If it's a nocturnal creature, it will be extremely docile in the day, and you'll have to prod it alot to get it moving. Else, get the tel # for the nearest snake farm so in the future, they can rescue it. If you were a real man, you get a PVC pipe with a loop at the end, snag it, put it in a rice bag and take it out to the jungle to release it.

Looks to me like a dog faced water snake- you said it had a head like an eel? Were you near water, such as paddies or a stream?
Harmless anyway, and pretty clumsy when not in water.

The reason the neighbour said it was dangerous was because it didn't move much when I prodded it. Therefore it doesn't have to run away because it can defend its self!
Not against a spade it isn't.
