Thread: Sirindhorn Aquarium Nong Khai

The Sirindhorn Aquarium Nong Khai is located on the campus of the University of Khon Kaen.
When comming from Udon you have to follow the route to the friendship bridge then turn left after crossing the railway and again turn left.

Opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00-16:00
Entrance fee is THB 50 for Adults, THB 100 for foreigners. Thai drivers license is accepted to pass as local.

While some people are claiming that the Aquarium shows all fishes present in Thailand it focuses on the large specimen, e.g. the well known siamese fighting fish is only present as poster showing different varieties.

In the marine section only fish are shown, so all corals are pure plastic and the tanks are fairly spartanic.

















A lot of space have the introduced species which are famous for fishing as the Arapaima, Pacu or red tailed Amazonas catfish.






What I can't understand is why they show crippled specimen of quite common fishes as the spotted snakehead, Channa marulia.
Also they show cripple breeds as the parrot chiclid having a deformed body and missing the tail fin.






The most impressive tank is a giant construction of like 10 m high and containing around 10000 cubic meters of water. A 25 m long tunnel reaching down from first floor to the ground floor allowing to walk under the fishes.






At the exit there are two soft shelled turtles of gigantic size (over 100 cm) placed to throw coins at - if the coin stays above the turtle you have luck.




My conclusion is, that while it's definitely not the best aquarium I have visited it's in any case worth the visit as it exhibits a lot of the local species you will never see in nature.
