Thread: The beauty of Glenfiddich

I finally bought a bottle of this yesterday - 1400B - but a joy to consume.

Far better than my last bottle of whisky - Spey Royal (as yet unfinished).


Just thought I'd let you all know about my new friend.

my first encounter with glenfiddich I remenber as if it just happened
it was on 25th of January, Bobby Burns Night, 1978 in Chad in the middle of nowhere, working on a World Bank irrigation project , we had a Scottish engineer that on that particular night excused himself, got up from the bridge table and disappeared for a whole ten minutes to reappear in a kilt, playing a bagpipe and after some sorrowful laments, read a poen or two (none of us auslanders could make heads or tails of) and then ... broke out a bottle of Glenfiddich nectar ambrosia of the gods.

From that day on I drank but and only of the Glens
if no glen, zippy no drink whisky!

Oban is nice.

Glenfiddich - supposedly it means 'valley of the deer' in Gaelic.
(I read that on the advertising blurb)

I agree with you RC about Master Blend - a blend of Meths and white spirit with a dash of whisky!

Spey Royal is perfectly drinkable IMO but doesn't exactly get the juices flowing.

There's used to be a scotch bar in Los Gatos called C.B. Hannegan's. I don't know if it's still there but we spent a few hours in the bar trying single malts. I tried Knockando, Laphroaig (10yr), Macallan (12yr), Talisker, Glenfarclas (21yr), Laphroaig (15yr) and Glenfarclas (25yr). Laphroaig seemed to be nice and smokey and I've drank it more often than any other single malt.

Here's the list.

Glenfiddich is certainly nice. I like Glenmorangie as well. All a bit spendy.

Try the Benmore scotch it's very nice for the money, 370 Baht! Drinkable straight or on the rocks.

Another one I've found for reasonable money at duty free shops is Bowmore Surf.

That sounds distinctly like northern Minnesota vernacular!
Myself, I do care for that rich peaty taste of Glenorangie too.
Can't afford the damn stuff too often...

I agree with you and do much the same sort of thing, not that I drink much single malt these days. Macallan is a good drop if you like the darker "peatier" type of malts.

Theres a new blended whiskey I've seen here Benmore I think its called thats not bad about 300 bhat a bottle.

I went to Oban 2 years ago. It was cheaper to buy it from the Oban branch of Tesco's than the distillery itself.

Not that any of you should be on whisky here - it is the road to oblivion in this climate,.

For an authentic Thai drinking experience- purchase Random Chances' turnip and swede hooch carbonated with nitrogenous oxide.

...ah yes, thats the nitrogenous oxide. Its not laughing gas.... nitrous oxide, this stuff is made out of chemical fertilizer. It actually makes your brain melt.

Waht colour was it, if it was purple it could of been "Yaa Dong" Lao Khow (White Whiskey made from rice) mixed with "seua sip song dtua" 12 tigers or "gaowlian" (sp and have'nt a clue what it would translate to if anything). Anyway they are herbal type mixtures said to promote health and "give you power" usually drunk neat in small shot glasses with some water on the side. For a really efective hangover try drinking it as a Chang chaser
I think the Moog was just refering to Sang Som and soda. He's a bit "hi so" so tends to think something like Sang Som might be a bit rustic

I once tried to make some. I bought a bottle of the herbs and sticks from OTOP, poured some sort of spirit over it, then tried to quaff it the next day.

Oh God.

It was terrible. It was like drinking hydrochloric acid.

I'd made a mistake. You're supposed to decant it from the sticks, sugar it and then let it stand for a week or two.

I gave it to an gay 50 yr old alkie friend of mine who used it to KO Thai chaps during a rugged bottoming.

Never heard of anyone putting sugar in it. The fresh or dried stuff your supposed to let stand for a few days. The suff I was on about you just buy in sacets, put it in a bottle, shake and just let stand. Supposed to be really good for you sex life, never really been able to tell though as the misses wont let me near her if I've been drinking it as it stinks
