    Tescos own brand Meths

    "A Gerbil Taste Test"

I like to start the evening off with a few pleasant G&T's while I watch the sun go down over the fields.

This is my usual preferred tipple:

However at 950baht+ per bottle this can cut serverely into my monthly drinks budget (I'm naturally just a tight bastard ).

Anyway, I was stocking up at Tesco's the other day and I noticed this hidden away on a lower shelf, almost as if they were embarrassed to be selling it:

Notice the 'subtle' similarities in bottle shape, label and colour of contents? Priced at only 169 baht, I thought 'How can I go wrong?' (Little did I know )

So anyway, I picked up a bottle of this and a bottle of this:

as they were out of Bombay Sapphire Anyway, this is 295 baht and isn't too bad.

Later that evening I decided to give the White Elephant a try. I had a few friends around, so we all gave it a shot and gave it our considered verdict:

    FCUKING GHASTLY

Most were of the opinion it was actually mislabeled bleach or similar. Anyway, the remainder of the bottle will be kept in a place of honour and offered to the neighbours when they pop round uninvited and are too interested in finding out "What the farang is drinking"

Gerbil's Verdict: Avoid at all costs, or give as a present to someone you dont like.
You, sir, are a God among men....
Short Men, who aren't terribly bright....
More like dwarves with learning disabilities....
You are a God among Dwarves With Learning Disabilities.

I think the 'White Elephant' could definately be used for that as well.

Great stuff, you can actually taste the Juniper berries, rather than a perfume laced rubbing alcohol.

Course any gin served with anything but ice and olives is indistinguishable in my book.

Our local Tesco was selling gin, vodka and white rum.
I think it was branded as Uncle Tom.

    Complete and utter shite.
It was undrinkable. I gave away to the local Lao Khao experts.

A while ago Tops restocked with Gilbey's - this time with 1 litre bottles.
I managed to get 3 bottles over a couple of days before they realised that the price stickers were for 70cl bottles !
If I had told them someone would have lost "face" and we dont want that to happen do we ?

The Gilbey's vodka is slightly better than the Gilbey's gin. IMO, cheap gin is just difficult to drink. Cheap vodka seems to offend less.

Anyone ever tried to stretch it and mix something good like Bombay and a bottle of something cheap? what was the result?

If it was spelt "Gorden's" then probably not! "Gordon's" is ok though.

Not upscale at all dear boy- Mrs Betty Windsor ( the well known housewife of London ) has decided to pay up as I have reached a "certain age' and I can afford to regain my natural place in society!!

I think the cheap (around B300?) Gilbeys gin on sale is made under licence in the Phillipines. I also think they do a good job and it tastes good

Bombay gin is nice but now over-priced. Gordons is best bought in duty free shops on special offer.

Thai "gin" is not very nice at all

This is my favourite. I think Bombay is overrated. I buy Gilbeys here too.

I consider myself an expert with years of experience in this fine tipple.

As Happyman can tell you, I'm a longtime lover of straight gin, no embellishment other than an occasional olive. Best value per baht is Gilbey's, next is Gordon's a distant third is Beefeater and the rest are crap.
