Despite my newbie status I have already hatched some nuggets that I can sprinkle in this thread

Nugget 1. Never drink one whisky. Always drink at least 2 simultaneously. (one sip after another obviously). This lets you compare and callibrate your networked knowledge of the flavours and how they stack up against one another.

My most recent additions are a 1981 double aged oloroso casked Dalwhinnie and a Glen Moray.

    Detailed sampling notes to follow.

Whisky snobs. More than likely on this forum to be paid shills so take no account of them as they are promoting for money.

What sort of malt would you recommend with canine biltong stroller- a smoky, peaty Islay, or a lighter Speyside style? How much sugar should I add?

A local connoisseur known only as Somchai recommends a widely available sugar syrup known as coca cola as an additive- he says not only does the sweetness help take away the unpleasant malt whisky taste, but it makes it all nice and fizzy too. I'm thinking of trying it with my aged Laphroig. Should I add ice cubes, or might this compromise the fizz factor?

I still have some left over Christmas pudding, so I was thinking of pouring a liberal dose of my favorite Tallisker over it, and setting it aflame- but would this reduce the sugar taste?

The Dalwhinnie is very nice. You can taste the sherry cask a little bit.

The Glen Moray is OK. Tastes a bit medicinal beside they far superior Balvenie though.

The bottle-o has Jameson on sale. It is not a single malt and is Irish but it is quite famous so I thought I might try it.

They also have Johnnie Walker black label on sale. Also not a single malt but I am curious to try a quality blend beside the single malts to see how they compare.

I have been hitting the brandy too. Turning into a proper alcoholic I am.

I think I may have found the perfect mixing syrup.

This stuff is clear as water with zero bouquet leaving the malts aromas uncorrupted.

Normal golden syrup is caramelised a bit so it has some influence on the resulting flavour. The Agave syrup I recommended previously is much better than golden but still has some identifying aroma.

This Canadou cane syrup is perfectly unadulterated.

^^I have never tasted rum to my knowledge Dilli but I might give it a try.

Captain Morgans is just for mixing with coke I think but there are some interesting rums to be found so I gather.

I got a small bottle of this poove malt.

I was surprised how different it tastes to the Balvenie.

I previously thought the balvenie was delicate and perfumed but the Glen Morangie makes it taste heavy and woody by comparison.

The Glen Morangie nose has floral notes and is reminiscent of being stroked with rose petals on a spring afternoon.

Very clean nose without a hint of peatiness.

This is undoubtedly a poove's malt par excellence and that is not a disparagement but a compliment.

If you like your Islay malt with a kick in its tail then you could do worse than Smokehead.

Reputed to be a 6 year old Ardbeg it is not as silky as my 16 year old Lagavulin but that peat smoke hits the back of the throat and fumigates the palate all the same.

I'd also recommend the Smokehead, to be followed with an even stonger Islay flavour, Dun Bheagan.
(of course with a heapful of pure white sugar or Golden Syrup )

I have not seen the Caribbean cask. I still have some 10 year old left. Top stuff.

Sounds good. Next on my shopping list was going to be a Talisker 10 year old but that one sounds interesting. Anything as long as it has smoke billowing from its arse!

The bad news is that I am still committing heinous unspeakable crimes against malt whiskey.

The good news is that I am down to a 15% mix. A lot of 'purist' malt fans add 50% water so which is more poove 15% sucrose syrup or 50% water? I ask you?

The syrup I use is specifically designed for mixing in drinks without altering the flavour as it is a pure sucrose solution with literally no detectable aroma.

For me it transforms the unpleasantly harsh whisky into a (still potent) 'nectar of the gods' liqueur without corrupting the complexities of the character.

I need to get one of those glencairns as I am currently using my grandparents' vintage sherry glasses (oh no there goes what remains of my already shredded whisky credibility!)

Nah, some guys just add a bit of water to the over 50% malts, because the alc numbs the taste buds.

In the 'affordable' segment, I'd also recommend Ian McLeod's Islay and Finlaggan - the Original is a stong peaty treat with a sweet underbody, the Old Reserve like a young Lagavulin. Oh, and The Ileach, rumour says it's a young Caol Ila.

At $132 it had better be!

My uncultured palate is not worthy of such rarefied nectar and I would be smote by the whisky gods if I added anything to it.

I confess to having purchased a bottle of Bailey's in the recent past.

But in my defence it was a present for girly-woman. Her favourite tipple.

But I also confess to not turning my nose up at the offer of a glass

The only place a bloke is allowed to surreptitiously enjoy Baileys is at his girl's gaff while she is having a glass!
