    The North of Thailand

Just got back from a few days away touring some of the wilder parts of the far north, and I thought I'd share some pics.

    Doi Inthanon Picnic

Sit on a bamboo platform in a stream just below a waterfall and feast on barbecued chicken, som tam, salted fish and beer.

    What to eat:

The view upstream (5 min walk):

    The view downstream:

    A trip to Chiang Dao

About 90 minutes north of Chiang Mai, sleepy little village with a stupendous mountain. We stayed at the Yang Tone Farmstay in a lychee orchard. You can pick your own fruit for free to eat with your beer. Cheapest rooms 490 baht a night, upto 1,500 baht for the best rooms in the high season. Very quiet, very peaceful, absolutely bugger all to do at night.

    Mountain scenery:

    A cheapo hut:

Lychees ready to pick from the trees:

The view from the more expensive huts:

Trip to Chiang Saen and the Golden Triangle

Nice views across the Mekhong River to Laos:

An outrageous white glittery temple, just south of Chiang Rai on the way to Phayao:

If anyone wants any extra info on how/where etc, just post here.

    Nice pics Benbaa.

I'm a sucker for waterfalls and that one looks great - but that temple is bizarre.

If you leave Chiang Rai on the A2 heading south towards Phayao, there's a big junction between 5 and 10km outside town. The temple is visible on your right. The photos actually don't do it justice. Not only is it gleaming white, it's covered in tiny mirrors, so it looks like one of those glitter balls in discos. I saw it two years ago just after they'd started work, and they're still a long way from finishing.
