Tomorrow, or the next day; got a day of lawyers ahead of me tomorrow. lady next door to the khao phat place does a mean Kaow Soy at about 25 baht, thats a bit pricey but she's all elegant with a waterfall and fresh ground coffee, french roast oliang, fuckin' delicious! 35 baht? Outrageous.Originally Posted by aging one
Kaow Soy is the pre-eminent dish of the north. For the uninitiated, it's a curry/coconut milk/flat yellow noodle soup with usually chicken but sometime beef or pork topped with crispy noodles. Comes with all the chili paste you can eat and a wedge, or two, of lime. usually a whole chicken leg but in my old moobaan they served a 10 baht bowl with on e chicken wing two, three bowls was a belly full man. Got a tour of the restaurants, the flower and tree farms 'round my place commin' up.
'ats alright man we gotta Front Gate for all you fatties out there.Originally Posted by klongmaster

Found this restaurant on my walk today, I've driven by 100's of times never gave it a tumble. dishes are in the 20 - 45 baht range se of the expensive stuff's up to 60 baht. I'll give it a review in a week or two. Maybe see if I can;t get BB and CMN to join for a night out of the town shold oughta take the little lady out but she'd freak ot she saw me payin 40 baht for a hole crispy fired snake head fish. I can hear her now, "paeng maaaaak!"
Had a few minutes to talk with the lady the runs/owns it, Painter, hospitable bought me some nice iced water and showed me around let me wander it does pretty deep and is a funky, old hang out reminds me a bit of 'Canyon' in the east bay. ricebarn/house available for 2500 a mo.
My area is loaded with them 120 - 200 baht an hour no-tell mo-tells. most of nestled quietly between garden spots and litte hidaways like this. The more I explore this area the more I'm lookin' for a dude, or dudette, to come and buy my 120 TW so I c'n buy here.
'Course ya never know man, the other neighborhood might be even more intrstin' I can walk to it from here; it ain't a long ways, mebbe three kilo.

I left this pic out, had second thoughts. Couple a ladies praying while two others sit by, patiently waiting. They were still waiting when i left.
The ones waiting seemed to be making a day of it, they sat and gossiped.
One of the things that attracted many (ok some) of us here was a "grace of life" we caught a glimpse of while visiting (you others that came for the pussy could do with a bit culture anyway). Walks around the neighborhood gives me little glimpses when ever I do it.
Sounds great. That's a part of Chiang mai I have rarely seen.Originally Posted by Frankie

Okey dokey.
Just to give y'all a taste of the place CMN, BenBaa and I'll be having a nice evening of Thai food and Thai beer-like substance. Here's a few pics of the restaurant. Forget the name it's one fo them Thai names that go on forever and it's on a street about 200 meters from my soi 'n I'm not sure if the name Don;t think there's a sign. f you turn North off the Super Hiway onto Potaram Rd (no sign) about 750 meters down you'll come to a couple of streets astride a small cemeted creek.
As you can see it's a very busy street, quite congested. Just get me all jangley and nervous. It's a hectic place this neighborhood. This street is lined with tree farms and gardens. Across the street from this busy intersection:
Sits the largest one n the street. Excuse the lame attempt and piecing together two pics. It's a wide one (1900+ pixels) so if you wanna, you can clik on this pic to see the full size one.
After a nice walk (figure the guys'll not be walkin' but I will. We'll get to sit down in this place.
Another view:
The owner is an artisit, I think. There are tons of those paintings hung all over the place, no prices but they are definitely for sale; just ask. Her art comes out in the classy room as well; this room is below another small home and sits about half a meter below grade. Done very nicely in exposed aggregate concrete with a water feature in the middle of the floor.
This room has a couple of large paintings by the owner sitting around.
The menu's reasonable (sorry about the flash folks)
The bog clean.
And if you like the neighborhood, she's a got a room for rent 2500 per mo. You gotta buy your own hot water heater. But you get a western toilet
The smell coming fromthe kitchen was almost enough to make me cut my walk short, but I resisted.
So how's the food?
The chiangmai boys'll give her a shot later this week and let you know, I'll even promise to make a note of the name; it's pai fon something something something. I'll write it down.

Went up to the lake with some chums today. Four of us drank six bottles of Leo and had seven dishes, including a whole fish, some squid, some prawns, spare ribs, som tam etc, plus rice. The bill? 600B. Damn fine.
I went out at lunchtime with two work colleagues, two pints of beer and my orange juice came to over £8 - 450 Baht.
Smeg's right, life is sooo much better here in the UK.
Hey Frankie, you'll have to show me that place when I'm up in CM next. The art in the Night Market is a bit too expensive and 'generic' for me.
That big green face would go lovely in my dining room. Do you think I'd get it on the plane as hand luggage?
TIT I'm sure you could work something out.
Next time you're up this way We can spend a day, or two, huntin' art for you. This is a great place for browsing for art and very nicely handcrafted goods, silver, teak carvings, jade carvings painted and assembled art.
Know a guy makes figurines from dead animal parts.
The Sunday walking street has numerous painters selling their goods. There are a few art galleries around. Large srtist community here. Kinda reminds me a bit of that place in New Mexico (Taos?) or Sedona Arizona Hell, we can even get you a finely hand-carved, asian rosewood, four-poster bed with canopy if you like.
A bit much for my gaff, Frankie, but I'm always on the look out for some decent (and cheap) pictures.Originally Posted by friscofrankie
