Thanks for the pics, very interesting. Good commentary too.

A few years ago, I did something similar. Joined a group which gave out school supplies to kids in the mountains. It was a mountaineering/community service gig. We gave out school supplies in May (during the summer break), in time for the new schoolyear's opening in June. Gave each kid a small backpack containing school supplies like notebooks, pencils, crayons, etc. It was a nice feeling - was a physically exhausting trip, as we had to carry heavy backpacks, climb mountains and distribute the goods to many schools (our group had 100+ ppl), but it was great to interact with the kids and see their smiles. I haven't joined the hikes recently, but still donate to the cause. One kid's pack costs 300 pesos, and a person can donate even if he/she isn't joining the hike. I don't know if I'll join the hike this year, since it depends on time, budget and fitness levels! I had to really up my fitness routine that year in preparation for the climb - it was a 2-day intensive climb in the mountains.

    Cheers, NTM!

Thanks for the encouragement. I honestly never thought to do anything this until I read another member here talk about it. It was very moving to see how much the students and teacher appreciated it.

For our family road trip this year we headed to Umphang to visit Thi Lo Su waterfall. This a place i have never been to before so really didn't know what to expect. Fortunately we did this trip mid week so once we got through Mae Sot there was very little traffic other than the crazy trucks. The drive was really great 1219 turns through the mountains on a small two lane road. To bad i was driving the in laws suv with the family on board. Going slow and safely was the rule witch was fine for this road.

This was one of the few places to pull off for a break.

The town was nice and we just found a place to stay once we arrived. The family is in charge of picking and found a nice place just outside of town. No air-con but it was cool so that was ok.

Here are a few creatures for the hotel grounds. I wish I'd taken a picture of the ants in our bathroom the toilet was literately black with them.

This was a pretty big one maybe 3-4" you can see a little fly in his web.

    same one.

The best part was the river raft. probably 1.5 hours.

Here are a few pictures along the way. The forest was impressive so many big trees and plants.

This is where we started. The river looked petty calm.

We didn't see another raft until we stopped at the midway point hot spring.

The root systems on the trees where so cool. Probably a necessity in the rainy season.

    Another one hanging on.

A little waterfall along the way. These pictures don't really do it justice. It was so green and lush.

We saw a monkey along the way but that was about it for wildlife. We probably scared them all away from yapping.

This was the end of the raft part. This was our cool old boatman.

They dropped the raft halfway up the hill. The old guy was probably hurting.

    I hate those spiders!
One was scampering about the toilet whilst I was sat on the throne. Can't stand anything that moves that fast.

I lifted my feet of the floor 'just in case' but it wasn't interested in me, luckily. Don't know if it was poisonous (not to us but could immobilise a small animal no doubt) and I left it alone. The next two days it remained on the wall out of arms reach just skulking about.

I had one of those real fast spiders in our house. Had to use a small trash can to catch it. I could feel it jumping around in there creepy. I tossed it outside trash can and all.

These pictures are from the camp area and walk through the jungle to the waterfall.

This one is one of the only clear pictures i got from the back of the truck from the end of the raft trip to the camp area. About 30-40 minutes and very rough. This was a good section.

And the camp area where we had lunch. no many people around.

Here is a tourist map of Tak. Looks packed full of great stuff.

This tree was in the camp area being consumed by another tree or vine. There were alot of these around.

This big tree had the most huge root system.

Our guide told us people start small fires in these trees to extract some kind of sap. Looks like this one got away from them. Alot of these big ones had similar but smaller fire holes in them.

Our guide pointed out these beauties. I think he said they were forest lotus or something. There were quite a few around. Looks like something from the dinosaur times.

These bamboo were huge and some had these holes in them from people or animals getting those bamboo worms out in wet season

Here is a wide shot of the falls it was so nice that it wasn't packed with tourist. Really only a hand full around. It must be very impressive at the end of rain season.

Our guide took us up to the send tier for a look around. This was on the way up.

And this it looked like a little pipe. All natural.
