Christ, you don't half talk some shite.
to think...you can just find a room. CRAZY, right?
in a city with hotels, littered along the BTS...i know it may be difficult for some to muster up some thai language and spend an hour or two searching. or even just minutes...there are so many places, you can check out 5 on the same soi.
LOL

from my experience, some of the rooms on those hotel sites seem good but end up being the musty, dank, 30-year old places, that when you walk in, you go "oh shit no". they have an odd feel to them and not worth even half their price.
...thats what you get for a 1k/night "deal"
for budget places, i'd rather see it up close. but thats just me. i cant stand many of those older hotels like malaysia and such. they have a weird feel to them. nana hotel...there are many and many.
but feel free to trust the websites matt. just my 2 satang that at that price, you're not going to get a decent place either way. if you show up and scout rooms, at least you know what you're getting. some of those hotels have really different rooms, where a corner room is WAY better than one along the hallway. seeing it up close is huge.
and dont listen to cy when he says you can't find a freaking hotel room in bangkok. what a load of codswallop.
ah, yes, that's just what I said wasn't it.Originally Posted by stfranalum
how astute of you to have noticed.
Then there are the sites that include sometimes hundreds of independent customer reviews of just the one hotel, of course.Originally Posted by stfranalum
But yes, better to arrive with no booking and stumble around hopefully for an unknowable length of time at 35 degrees after your 'long ass' flight from the states, as I think you put it.
How curious this US obsession with the gluteus maximus is. And how much you post seems to have passed via your own.

bags + lag = book 1 night "well" for arrival w/ a late check out for the following day.
Then step down to something more affordable in the neighborhood,...or a simple ride away.
I like the Novotel at the airport for just this situation (coming and going).
Fair enough.
That would hardly be the choice of someone who has lived in Bangkok though.
And your idea of finding something 'more affordable in the neighbourhood' would still leave you thirty kilometres from the city centre.
In swampland.
Next.
Au contraire. I lived in the big smoke for 8 years and it's my choice.
I didn't think details would be necessary, Cy but ok:
Book well for your arrival day & 1st night. Consider doing the same for your pre-departure.
Your wife will love you even more for it. (bonus)
IF that initial booking is downtown, perhaps you could then go cheaper for the remaining 3 nights (in the same neighborhood or district)
the following day with relative ease.
If you wanna' slide in via the Novotel, book your el' cheapo digs online and take a cab.
Aren't you extra special catty today(?)
the prob with this is that without knowing what time you arrive and how your sleep will be, you might end up booking a decent room and just sitting around, or what ive done a few times, sleep some on the plane and arrive excited, not being able to sleep until the next nighttime. in which case, booking a decent hotel is a complete waste, apart from having a place to put your bag. but with so many taxis around, you can carry a reasonably sized bag with you, basically anywhere.Originally Posted by hick
thats why just getting a room when you arrive makes sense. you dont know how you're going to feel. personally, ive never gotten off the plane and needed a place to sleep asap. the excitement of it all has me up for at least a few hours.
you can easily head down to sukhumvit and ask a taxi driver to take you around to a hotel. you pop in and see it...and can get this done in no time. (dont leave your bags in the car while you look at the room lol...but often the cabbies are happy to wait as they get another fare out of it)
it such a long haul. it does weird things to your body, (and especially on the way going back home, the jet lag is crazy.)
why stay at the airport if his destination is in the city? its like you go ALL that way to just 'effing pack it in at the end...Originally Posted by hick

for shits n giggles, was just looking at airbnb...for rooms @ 20 bucks or thereabouts. holy heck are they nicer than any of the hotels at similar prices.
...the kicker is that you will end up paying for it in taxis.
oh and be aware on airbnb...there are places where you share an apartment with the owner! i had booked a room in bkk (2 bedrooms) and the guy later mentioned that he would be there as well! ha! with wife and 2 kids...you gotta be kidding me. so for what it's worth, be sure to get clear on that little fact. the rooms though seem a world better than the average 1k per night hotel down on suk or silom.
You're right. The two of them will probably be charged to jump right in the smoke.
I'm mixing mine with theirs.
I tend to ease in and ease out anymore. Don't particularly enjoy flying and never sleep on board, so...there's that. Pretty much done with getting all giggly and spastic n shit.
Once you're off the game - it's just the kok.
Got upgraded to Biz the last two times in and kinda' thought: 'relaxing en route to get there and....relax'
ever been on less than full flight? sometimes ive had a whole row to stretch out and sleep. it's utter paradise.Originally Posted by hick
other than that, me too...cant sleep at all sitting down. very jealous of those who nod off so quickly.
Jeezus after reading all the suggestions here for the budget, mine is still the best.

It's not 30yrs old, dank, stinking of tobacco or near any whore areas.
Just as aside ...
We just flew back to Thailand ... 9 hour flight.
We have 2 just turned 3yo's
Thai Airlines looked after us.
The plane is 3+3+3 seating.
We paid for 4 seats, 3 in one row and me behind in an isle seat (to pick up the toys etc).
Thai gave us the three in a row, and then 'blanked' the 2 seats next to me so that we actually had the use of 6 seats. Two full rows.
We each got a rugrat, they had a sleep for a couple of hours, I got to actually eat a meal, a few beers and 1 1/2 movies. For me ... that is defined as a blissfull flight. Kids didn't annoy me, or anyone else.
Bliss ... pure Bliss
looking for a place you can cook and relax in as well ? check out the Omni up soi 4, sometimes u can get a great deal
I cant handle small rooms or rooms without a window and love a place i can spread out as hate the heat of the day in Bangkok
would rather pay more than less for a room, Especially when i am on vacation.

It looks nice and clean but doesn't have a pool and he will be sweating like a rapist with that kilometre walk to the BTS.Originally Posted by DJ Pat
Contrast that to Hopeland where he'd only be 300 metres from a BTS on the Sukhumvit Line, a little walk over the road to W district Beer garden and could be dossing by this pool all day...
It's also only 28 sqm compared to Hopeland's 38sqm.
Hopeland is a budget busting 10 usd a night more expensive though
But look what you get just in room

soi 46 is WAY the fuck out there
and on their site Hope Land Executive Residence
29 sq m 4,000 baht
38 sq m 4,500
Omni towers is 1,890 for a one bedroom apt with kitchen 65 sq meters on booking.com
One stop from Ekamai, 2 stops from Thong Lor, 3 from Phrom Pong, 4 from Asoke and 5 from the shit hole that is Nana and all of its loitering ladymen of which you have to stagger past in a dimly lit area to get to that decrepit Omni Tower which is chock full of Indians, plus it's closer to the airport and the beaches.Originally Posted by Phuketrichard
hopeland wins, imo.
