We were due to go yesterday (Monday), but the wheel came off over the weekend so it was delayed, I thought cancelled, but seems she decided otherwise and wasn't about to give up a trip, so when her screen started showing images of CR I guessed that's where we would be going.

Oh well, may as well get trivial...I've been collecting coins for a while, in 3 x 6 liter water jugs. Over the past week or so the last one was filled. I expected around 10k in 1 baht, 20k 5 baht and 30k 10 baht. Now it needed counting, so I offered her the deal, take it home on her next visit to bkk, which was last Friday, get her sister's kids to count them, but agree here in advance to give her mum for ma's day either all of the 1 baht, or 15% of everything. She chose 15% of the lot.

Friday night's call came through, 8k, 20k, 30k respectively, worked out her share at just less than 9k, rounded it in her favour, told her that I want 45k and mum can have the rest (13k). Silence. Ok? Silence, then, but you say all the 1 baht and 15% of the rest (15.5k). No tirak, you take 15% of all, which should be 8700, but I am giving you 13k. Silence, then grumpy kicks in and, ok I bring it all back. I thought she was kidding and said ok, do that, phone goes deads, I'm left wondering over the next two days wtf I've done wrong, figured nothing at all other than being stupidly generous, and switched off my end.

Sunday she turns up as usual as though nothing's happened, tells me how they tried to convert it all into notes and decided not to go the bank route which would cost 2%, which I agree with, so will hold onto it and spend it in our own sweet time. No hurry, I can get through that lot real fast and can have lotsa fun doing it.

Anyway that's a side issue and nothing to do with the trip which, having realised we were going on after all, told her to organise from start to finish, mug that I am, and with the previous one in mind.

After showing me the pics of CR she was about to book returns with one of the budget airlines when I asked if she had checked the others. No. Do it then. Ok. That was late this (Tuesday) morning, and had I not got involved it would be late this evening before any progress was made.

Early afternoon, after 3 of our debit cards were declined because of some Thai reason that I still don't want to understand, she was told she could pay cash at 711. She confirmed with me before booking that it was a round trip, which is just as well because I had already told her several times to book one way because somewhere on the site she showed me was a promo saying the return if booked separately would be (2 x) 500 baht cheaper, which could be better used elsewhere. Also asked her to confirm that this promo was not a typical Thai teaser that costs a mere 2k to save that thousand, which she did, and promised me she did, so I expect the return to be more expensive but not sure by how much.

Another plus is that she was going to book for a week, though I think that's a long time for CR, so leaving it open makes more sense. Next, she went to 711, paid, returned with receipt and I think that bit's under control.

15.5k (8k + 15% of 50k), not 23k, but the real amazing bit is that - she knows - I do not keep accounts with her and aside from maybe 15-20k we would spend on day to day stuff till the novelty wears off, over time she and her family would be ending up with the bulk of it anyway.

Hey, but I do not begrudge it, she's worth it and more when both brain cells are working.

Also, you can't use Thai debits cards to pay for things online or over the phone (imo).

I think it's strange to show up with so much money but then NOT give it all to them. Or do they enjoy lugging around heavy jugs with coins? And then the remaining 2 back again?

That was asking for trouble and you got it.

And get a Thai credit card.
