I'm going to miss the Mekong when it's time to relocate.
I'm going to miss the Mekong when it's time to relocate.
So we blast out of the restaurant and follow Hwy 212. Around 70 percent of the highway is in very good condition and work is ongoing finishing the rest. Next year it will be like a race track.
Glorious views along here into Lao.
We arrived in Khan and straight into this thingo Garden, the Handbag loves Gardens so we went in for a wander.
Thais just cannot resist a photo opportunity. All good fun.
I enjoyed the Garden but not quite enough to join Facebook and be its friend.
So we traveled another 3 KLM into Khan proper, sorted a Hotel and plebed around as we usually do.
The Handbag was happy as she had never been here before. Onya Darlink.
It was a tad chilly up there, we had that cold snap set in. The locals were rugged like Eskimos and open fires were going. Khan is famous for its old wooden shop houses along the river front, these open fires ain't the best Idea.
Very small streets so a fire would burn the town down. Thais don't concern themselves with small details like that.

Nice flower this one, the plant was draping over the front of a shop house. Real nice.
Chiang khans a great little town I reckon, done a similar trip a few years ago going via udon then Loei came back to Lao via that same route along the river, can't beat a good road trip. Probably the only difference between your trip and mine was you didn't have a couple of feral nippers in the backseat, think I might of posted a thread on it ? A weekend in issan or so omit like that innit.
Not a bad looking sort your handbag I reckon tel.
^
Yes, the Hand Bag is a 100% total winner. She recons I give her the Horn.
I can quite understand that.
^Quite lovely she is....
Looking forward to your next roadie to issan I will jump across the border to have a bevvy with you in udon ! will bring my handbrake to meet your handbag then we can get out on the piss, jobs a good un, sorted, innit
Yes, she's not to bad my Hand Bag especially since she is now 47 years old. Anyway, she's very low maintenance, as long as I'm dragging her around the country and feeding her Noodle soup she is a very happy punter. In fact I've never seen her crack the shits. Here she is before Noodle soup.
And here she is after Noodle soup. By the way Darlink, you owe me 20 Baht, that being your half of the soup.
So the Handbags all fueled up, of we go down the board walk. All the river side towns are big on using the riverside and are busy improving access. It's brilliant. Khan has done a sterling job providing a two lane walk way and bike lane. If one liked the quiet life some of these towns would provide a glorious existence.
I love these old houses. Young Thais have inherited them and done them up into some really cool pads with blinding views over to Lao.
Many original old gaffers still just standing, the land would be worth a squillion.
All the rage these days is for younger Thais to bunk down in Tents. They hire out these structures in places with front row views. Fok that though.
Pop in here. No thanks Somchai, I'm off back to my Hotel thanks very much.
So we have chucked a lap of the riverside and are now on the main riverfront road that runs up through the string of original and restored wooden houses. If ya want to see some classic wooden abodes get your arse up to this town.
Our timing was shit house, it was Friday night with Chinese New Year approaching, the place is a muppet magnet at these times but just how things panned out. Lucky I had been here a few times before and new a gaffer.
The locals were doing a roaring business. Come here mid week and it's quiet.
