So how do you swim out of a riptide then cujo? are you taught that in Oz?
I hear your supposed to swim for the horizon
Don't try to swim against it back to the beach, swim parallel to the beach out of the rip (tide is a misnomer, it's not a 'tide') then once clear swim back to the beach.
(Or for the horizon if you like, up to you)

Nice lookin pics there mate.
Thailand still has many great beaches available to the punter.
Even in the heavily touristed resorts great spots are available if one is tuned in.
You made a great choice by the looks of it.
Off season is the way to go.
My abiding memory of China... I pity the minority of Chi who are tainted by the conduct of the overwhelming majority of their kith whether mainlanders or part of the diaspora in Asia - I doubt they'll ever learn... bring on the economic crash!
I've never been to Phuket though, my view on it probably bears no relation to how it really is. I still think of it as a pristine place like spots in the far south that you see on the brochures, but from what everyone says it sounds more like Pattaya.
^
Funny thing is just go down the coast a tad to kao Lak and one could be in another world.
Nice beach as well. Once again go out of season and have it all to ones self.
When I think of Phuket I think of an Island. There are MANY Beaches coves and inlets.
I never saw Phuket town or anything resembling a bar.
We went straight from the airport to Bangtao beach.
It really was exactly what I was hoping for and expecting.
The attraction of Phuket is you can fly there.

Terry, Khao Lak is about an hours drive North of Phuket.
But you are right in what you say about another world. Khao Lak is made of two main areas, Bang La On and Bang Niang. Both areas are laid back and have nice beaches.
The Dragon Lady and I spent a couple of weeks there again this year and can highly recommend staying at either The Sands in Bang la on or the Ramada in Bang Niang.
The beaches are uncrowded and clean with a few little bars and Restos scattered around to enjoy a sunset drink and a bite to eat.
This area is the main jump off spot for day diving trips to the Similans during the open season. I can highly recommend the diving at Richelieu Rock.
Nice pics and thread and goes to show that there are still nice areas left on the island that you can visit without all the crap usually associated with Phuket.
You're fat,Ill fro you in the river

Urm,
I think you will find that khao Lak is south of Phuket.
Whatever, it's close to Phuket.
Yes Terry ,North of Phuket.
^
That's Funny, I must look at my Map.
I have been down there quite a few times and was always under the impression that it was Phuket then I drove South to Khao Lak.
I'll go take a look.
Cheers.
Google earth says North
glad u enjoyed it; Bang tao is nice an u also have Villa supermarket not that far away as well:
phuket is not all PATONG
a vote for Khao lak is 90 kms NORTH of Phuket!!!
and an additional note, its more expensive than Phuket
I'll take phuket anyday, plenty of great beaches to escape the crowd even in the high season.
^^
Thanks for that, My bad.
Only place south of Phuket is a couple of small island resorts with a lot of Asian and Chinese day tourists mainly and Ko Lanta the ocean and Langkawi island Malaysia
Khao Lak has a lot of nice beach front resorts and nice clean beaches, not covered in rubbish
The local people do not want or allow girlie bars so if that is your main interest don't bother going there
But for a pleasant quite holiday and friendly people I highly recommend it, plenty of things to see and do, about a hours drive north of Phuket airport to the main tourist area's , we drive there at least once a month on the weekend usually
South of Phuket
there are some nice islands off of Trang and Satun.
The villla mart is further down the main road, a few short kms, hang a left at the light/police station
and loads of restaurants to choose from and a good friday night market
Ko Racha Yai?
I think a resort there is used as a rudimentary marine science base:

The Andaman coast and Similan islands should hopefully become part of a trans-national UNESCO marine reserve too in the near future, and help keep it beautiful.

Glad you enjoyed yourself Cujo -You can do a lot worse!
A largish number of expats, myself included, actually like living near the quieter beaches of Phuket, like Bangtao. [just avoid Nikki Beach Club at the Layan end!]
Depends on what you want; Low season - occasional showers and wind, water not so clear but plenty of waves to surf.
High season - no waves and crystal water - but only a few more tourists as not many beach bars left after 'the cleanup'....
Beer's cold though year round; if you want rub shoulders with locals or catch some sporting events on TV, can recommend Peppers Pub. Or for less crowds, The Bridge, has a local friendly following.
I imagine Phuket is exactly the same as every tourist spot in the world.
If one is a local and knows the go one would never have any of the problems that Newbie tourists suffer and would have a very nice life living there.
