i've been promising to myself that i'd a full 77 province ride for a very long time now

circumstances have changed...not really much opportunity

I have a misses and kids and no money (like you seem to have)

However, even this 10 day trip was very special. That's all it takes.

I'm close to 40 and been riding bikes since 16. I really believe that if you learn to ride well, you adapt to any terrain, and use caution whrn it's called for - and smash the arse out of it when the sky is blue and the road is dry and smoothe

I have to add to that something that made me chuckle.

I was there at the end the of the rainy season.

Cheap, empty, and after a few beers and spliffs, the intense storms, thunder, lightening and winds sweeping straight off the Andaman coast and smash up your 200bt off season hut are most excellent and highly reccommended

I had the 6km beach to myself bar about 3 people.

Filling up for fuel and feeling sorry for the gas station business I asked

"Hope things get busier - all the best"

dude replied

"Why the fvck would we want it busier?"

Good vibe down there - as you would expect Thailand to be.

Where were the worst roads on your journey?
Driving to Samui last month, as soon as you get near Chumphon and all the way down to Surat thani, the roads were terrible. Fukked if I'd wanna ride that stretch on a bike. I tried to wheelie the Fortuner over a few potholes and dead dogs

Roads in south - lot of work being done - lot of boring stretches.
But obviously this is balanced by the blinding beaches and islands.

Up North - A lot of excellent roads - both quality of road and route (curves/mountain ups and downs etc)

The road below was for me the best ride on the trip. There is a 4km stretch just before you come into Mae Sariang (going north) That stretch deters 99% of traffic along the whole route because it's virtually impassable due to the state of the road - completely covered 99% in huge potholes. The only people that passed me from Mae Sot to Mae Sariang did so on this stretch. One pickup and one bike following. Both were going at high speed and using that method (can't remember what it's called) but if you pass a certain speed you "pass over" the potholes. Pretty awesome riding skills from the bike rider (they were 3 up). You get a clear run along one of the best roads for riding I've found yet here that goes through some seriously awesome territory running through the jungle mountains between NW Thailand and Burma.

A relevant question

I think life is short, and there is no one perfect spot, but a series of spots that work with where you are in your life.

Personally, I've been slap in the middle of Bangkok for 10 years, London 30 years previous to that. I'm looking to move out into the sticks - maybe not for good, but at least a few years.

While the beaches in the south are great, for me the north is even better. The combination of mountains, people and climate are second to none. Somewhere along the stretch of the Mae Hong Son Loop that runs from Mae Sariang to Pai might just be the ticket

2.5 years old.
Engine, gear oil and air filter changed every 1000 km.
45k on the clock
still runs like new.

Obviously no high top speed, but the roads are mostly curvy and you spend more time speeding up and slowing down quickly then going high speed in a straight line. As much as I did it on a scooter as a last resort, I really appreciated doing the trip on it in hindsight, learnt a lot and saw many benefits.
