The same family's who are running that Island now were running that Island when I was there.

The Mafia word gets bantered around but it's just the Few families from the get go who have all the power.

Typical Thai Story where the rich call the shots and all others under them are powerless.

Call them what you want but it's not a typical Mafia where one group is extorting all the business on that Island.

I suppose you could call it a bunch of long term mates looking out for each other.

Remember those filthy rich families had nothing when they started except beach front land which was worth nothing back in the Day before the Farang arrived and kicked of the Dive industry.

I can imagine every Thai island has its dominant families. At the time of the murders what seemed to disturb the media certainly in Britain was the way the families on Tao seemed to have the cops in their pockets but as you say the whole set up is just typical Thai.
The next time you are on the Island you should go and see the head man and tell him you helped to lay the foundation for his wealth. You never know he might buy you a beer
