I see in the calendar that Loy Kranthong is two weeks away (16th.). This is one of my favorite Thai festivals. I believe the event is best experienced in the North - CM in particular.
Anyone else enjoy this festival?
Post pics too please

used to float my Kranthongs in the Chao Phraya off the Oriental Hotel pier
but it has become too hardfile, too much traffic etc. and since they started usind all sorts of non biodegradable shit to make the floats, I've started staying at home floating in my G&Ts
I was under the immpression that Loy Krathong was this weekend. What calender did you see that on?
^ this one https://teakdoor.com/calendar.php
Yeah, it's on the 5th this year.
Pics after the event...
Damn - admin screwed up with the calendar !!
Cannot trust anything you read on this forum
For those of you who have only experienced loy krathong in bkk, you have no idea what you are missing ut on in Chiang mai. This place gets nuts, I will take some photos and make up an album after the event as well. It's nothing but three night of big bangs, pops, screams and sparks, oh yeah and some krathongs as well. Worth the trip up here i think, I had never seen anything like it.
^ i'm looking forward to seeing your pics
There is a big Thai community in Sydney and a lovely park on the Parramatta River where they have a big Loy Kratong festival every year.
The locals have joined in and the Thais have stall helping them make the Kratongs and Thai food stalls and dancing.
It is really a lovely evening.
Bah Humbug!
My favorite part of Loy Krathong is that no matter where you go you get to listen to the "Loy Krathong" song over and over and over and over again....
Download it here in MP3 format:
Loy Kratong Song MP3
And read all about it here:
Loy Krathong
I'm glad you screwed up on the dates William.
had me worried, my mother came especially for it and will be gone by the 16th.
I'm scared of loy krathong up here.
Like a fukking war zone.
I'll leave the picture taking to Cali Kid.
sometimes I wonder why you're here Marmers...Originally Posted by Marmite the Dog

Personally I think it's the best of all thai festivals and I really enjoy it every year...
^ I always want it to be a public holiday, I enjoy it that much
I'll let you know how many times I get hit by bottle rockets while snapping the pics.Originally Posted by ChiangMai noon
Me too, I think I enjoy it more than song kranOriginally Posted by William
I myself am not religious, I also was not aware that loy krathong had anything to do with religioun. Think about it this way, "Out of sight, out of mind". Who said it's not just another excuse to party again?Originally Posted by Marmite the Dog
I fucking hate it.
Lots of ignorant ****s park outside my gate and block it forcing me to get aruguments with them.
THe missus is worried since I'm on my own this year and has stuck a big no parking sign outside.
I accept that the tuk-tuks will park there but they will move if I need. When some monkey fuck parks across the drive that really really riles me.
Ms. B and Pim make their Krathong
Floating away.
This at Wat Suan Prik Thai
Who's the old fart trying to set the moo baan on fire?
My favourite too. I'll miss it in LoS this year although I might float a polystyrene ceiling tile in the bath to get in the spirit of it. As has been mentioned Chiangmai is manic....The scene on the river in Apocalypse Now comes to mind. I particularly like the lanterns; they look lovely.
Back off Margaret, you're on a sugar rush!
We were in Udon last year for Loy Krathong, started in the village and then moved to Nong Prajak Park. It's a lovely, festive atmosphere in the park with food and balloon vendors, krathong vendors, music, parades.
Several Thai gentlemen helped us crazy falangs with our krathongs, as we weren't on a smooth bank (would have been SO embarassing to fall in) and were quite amused that we weren't married yet -- lots of commentary on our krathongs staying together.
Best of all -- the lanterns are fabulous, a neverending stream of them moving across the sky.
I have photos but am still trying to figure out the gallery posting process.
