Muslim’s around Pattaya celebrate the Day of Aashura

Muslim’s around Pattaya celebrate the Day of Aashura.

Khun Niran, the Mayor of Pattaya along with Khun Itipon, Senior Adviser to the Mayor attended the Sheikh Mohammed Ali Mosque in Soi Siam Country Club on Saturday Morning to take part in Muslim ceremonies relating to the Day of Aashura which occurs on the 10th of Muharram in the Islamic Calendar and is a very important day for Muslims. As part of the day’s activities, it is customary to offer food and drink to everyone, regardless of their religion and as such, the Mayor and his Senior Adviser were invited to a special lunch provided by the Mosque as part of the Day of Aashura.

The origin of the Islamic Aashura is said to be that when Mohamed came to Mecca he saw the Jews were fasting, enquired why, learned that they were celebrating their coming out of Egypt with Moses (Passover), took his arrival on this fortuitous day to be a sign from the Almighty, proclaimed to his followers that Moses has a greater claim on him than on them, and instructed them to observe the holy day in the same manner.

But there seems to be some contention between the Muslim and Jewish calendars, because although both are dynamic against the Xtian calendar, the main holy days of all 3 religions vary by up to about a month against each other. The Jewish Passover is on the tenth of the Jewish month of Tishri, which usually falls in September or October, while Aashura is almost always in January.

Usra or Ushra - Arabic, ten
Eser or Usara or Usra - Hebrew, ten

But as with so many religious traditions and rituals, much is forever lost to history.

I didnt realise that the Muslim sudjood prayer position was originally practised by Christians. I was watching a programme last night which pointed it out.

I think Roman Catholic Priests perfected the position.

^^ Yes, many Xtian and Islamic rituals and traditions have been plagiarised, adopted, and adapted from paganism, and other religions and obscure belief systems.

We have Mormons, Jehovahs Witnesses, evangelist Christians and missionaries etc that aggressively perform their 'Christian duty' by spreading the gospel. They're everywhere.

Interestingly, I've never actually seen or heard of this sort of thing in the world of Islam. Do they have proselytisers too, outside of the Mosques?
