Jomtien Asaka Buscha Day, Buddhist Lent

Today I went to Wat Maikatingtong Temple (Wat Maikatingtong Temple/Jomtien) on Jomtien Beach Road to go and feed the Monks, I should mention that these are quite tame but can only be given food between about 7am and mid day.

I admit I didn't get up specially for this it was just a case of not having gone to bed that evening so thats the only reason I went.

Anyway as it is a big Buddha day the place was pretty well packed out, they got about 20 monks and some Nuns, and about a thousand people brought food for them, obviously there might be some wastage, got to feel sorry for these Monks really, their Temple isn't very impressive and on normal days they don't get many visitors so probably dont get much choice of food, but hell who said being a Monk would be easy, these are the sort of people that would be dole scroungers in the UK, to lazy to work for a living.

They had the usual food stalls and flower stalls selling stuff to give to the Monks, also the orange buckets full of stuff that Thai people like to donate.

Thai KFC anyone?

Well we got there just after 7am and there wasn't a Monk or a Nun to be seen, not sure where they hideout most of the time as I don't ever remember seeing Monks or Nuns there, suppose they have a little party room out back somewhere, anyway this was the first Nun I saw but she must have thought she was late as she was in a rush to get to the dining festival room or whatever it might be called.

The crowds swarming into the party room, notice most are wearing yellow, yep you guessed it, it's Monday morning.

Starting to get a bit packed out, I am going to take a bit of a wild guess here and I think you have to walk round anti clockwise, this is because everybody apart from me did.

Although I a do not follow Buddhism or any other religion, I find that comment both totally inoffensive and misplaced. A little respect please!

So onto dining with the Monks, we got about 1,000 devout Buddhists and myself slopping out the food for them, actually I didn't put out any of the food, my girlfriend wanted me to put out these Thai sweets she had bought, now the way this goes is you have to put one on each plate to share them round, to do this I would have had to use my hands, as I hadn't washed them for about 6 hours and had several pisses during that time the hygene factor put me off, I mean it isn't really fair to be handling other peoples food after touching your bits and pieces, I realise that many restaurant staff don't worry about that sort of thing but I try to avoid those sort of places.

As you can see in this first picture you have to put a spoon of rice into each bowl, as you can see by the mess on the table most of these people wouldn't get a job in an upscale restaurant.

This day these guys were eating better than I normally do, even got prawns in batter, it's a bit like being at a party and grabbing a bit of food is very tempting, but I think the monks get first dibs on everything.

Enough to keep a couple of hundred Monk happy I reckon.

Here we have the Monks getting ready for some strenuous chanting, Have to admit thats when I left, the shorts I was wearing were not suitable for sitting on the floor in, I did try but then the people around could see my bits and pieces and this really isn't the sort of place for that sort of thing.

So with the thoughts of all that food I decided to visit the BBQ pit, yep where they cook up the dead, at this Temple I have never seen this one open, I mean there is nothing to nick in there but it is always locked up, suppose it would be a good place to get rid of annoying neighbours and maybe that is why they keep it locked.

So on tip toes with arms up above my head I started snapping off shots, I think once your in this one there isn't much chance of getting out again so you really got to hope the Doctor got it right on your death certicate and you weren't just asleep.

Well this is me leaving, most are still in there watching the Monks eat or whatever they do after the chanting is over, next time I shall wear some underpants so I can get the during and after pics.

Sorry "dole scroungers" sounds better than NE slang. I have nothing but double trouble with the respect system in Thailand. I'm not sure if apologies are even accepted. Are they?
