Pimalai Resort

Earlier this year I went for a weekend break to the Pimalai Resort on Ko Lanta. In order to get there I flew to Krabi, then I took a bus for about an hour to a pier, where I then got on this:

which took me to Ko Lanta pier (about 1 hour)

I then walked through the high street of Ko Lanta

before getting on another bus to the resort

then off to my room

now this is actually 2 rooms, and upstairs and downstairs. I had asked for an upstair, but I guess they didn't hear me because when I got there I found I was in a downstairs room

having said that, the room was rather nice

but apart from the pool and spa, there ain't much to do at the resort

so on the second day I took a boat trip

before coming back to see the sunset

if you get the chance to go to Ko Lanta - or the Pimalai Resort, I'd say it was well worth the trip. Very relaxing. That said, I don't think you would include Pimalai on the backpack budget trail

It ain't cheap for a weekend away

And that is for the cheapy rooms, the villas are over a thousand bucks per night

wont be going there in the forseeable future....

Not quite, but since I've been here (4 years), hotel prices have gone thru the roof.

288 bucks a night? Who's paying this? That doesn't look like anything more than a 2000 to 4000K room, tops. Baht, of course (you do have to specify these days).

300 bucks, 1000 bucks a night...jeez, this ain't Hawaii.

I'm glad I got to see Thailand before it went to the kunts.

Is that resort the one the crown prince owns?

^the last I heard, one of the partners with Baker & McKenie was part-owner or majority owner. Don't know about the crown prince being involved

Outstanding thread. Koh Lanta was beautiful when I went just recently. It was low season and hardly any people there at all. A great escape indeed!

Rocks, water, sand, nighttime restaurant on the beach. So quiet and secluded. Just dim lights and the night waves rushing up on shore.

You are right - majority owner is a partner in Baker McKenzie (very nice guy) .... other partners are Thai industrialists. HRH is definitely NOT included.

me and the misses were thinking about going to koh lanta
havent been there for 6-7 years dare say its changing for the worse used to be a right old bargin at the prices im hearing these days i'll give it a miss and remember it how it was in old days

Prices have gone up, the southernmost part of the island where you used to be able to walk along the dirt track and catch out a bunch of wild macaques in the trees, is now paved, there are more resorts and the cheapest places are gone - and the place is full of Scandos, both tourists and people who have bought houses there (leased, etc). There's even a Scandinavian language school there for their kids.

Still a beautiful spot, but if you're looking for something with the feel of Lanta 7 years ago, perhaps Ko Ngai or Ko Kradan a bit further south towards Trang province, would be more up your alley.

I especially liked Ko Ngai. No roads on the island, the interior is a large hill all covered in rain forest and inaccessible as far as I know.
