    Koh Samet

Could someone give some good info on Koh Samet. I think that's the one about an hours drive from pattaya. I'm planning on a visit this July.

One hours drive from Pattaya to Ban Phe Rayong. Then the ferry is 1/2 to 1 hour depending on which beach you have chosen.

When you exit the ferry and get a taxi to th beach of your choice, the police will try to charge you 200baht for being a tourist. Mrs C told them where to go as I live in Thailand and pay taxes. So if you live in Thailand, show some sort of ID or get the misses to speak to them. AO will agree with me though, beautiful island - try Silver Sands Resort, further down from White Sands - bungalow on beach with a/c will set you back 1200-1500baht per night though very good.

It is getting pricey on samet though eh Cantana. Over a holiday weekend a couple of months ago they wanted 2,000 baht a night for a non beach bungalow at Silver Sands.

I like Samet Ville on Ao Wai, but the food sucks.

i prefer top take a speedboat - if theres a few of u then 1200 baht aint so bad - drops you where you want (so no taxi or 200 baht for the national park fee)

i often stay at Saiw Keow Villa - 1200 for comfortable airson room

Ao Hin Khok is one of the main backpacker and traveller's centres on Ko Samet and in season it can have a very festive feel to it, with both a lot of travelers and a fairly large ex-Bangkok contingent descending upon it.

The beach is great for swimming, though the only real shade is out the front of Jep's Restaurant.

It's a long time since I've been up to Samet but I remember staying at one of the most southerly beaches and it was beautiful. White talcum powder sand and crystal clear water. Can't remember the name of the beach but I think, looking at that map that it might have been Ao Kiew Nonok or maybe the one just north of it. Not overrun by tourists but enough people to be able to have beer with in the evening. No idea on prices or the name of the place we stayed at - just good memories.

I'm heading to Ko Samet this weekend with the g/f. Was thinking of Ao Phai -- Samed Villa looks great. But are touts a real problem on this island?

I always used to stay at Hat Sai Kaew, I am quite suprised it isn't on the map as it is the main tourist beach.

I've been looking on the internet and it looks like this island is VERY overpriced -- looks like the most expensive place in Thailand! So I'm thinking of taking the g/f to Ko Chang instead. My only holdup is the 6 hour journey, because we'd only be there for 3 days. But is Ko Chang nicer and cheaper than Ko Samet?

When I went for a very romantic weekend there, it was pretty cheap. I don't know what places you were looking at.

There's loads of bungalows available all over the island for low prices.

    Try looking at http://www.travelfish.org/

It's easy to go cheap in samet.
i used to go at least once a month when I lived in bangkok.
Used to stay at the silver sands guest house, or was it the white sands??
That one was modestly priced, used to be in the 4-600 baht range and well worth it.
plenty about which are quite a bit cheaper than that.
personally always preferred Samet to Koh chang, many people don't.

As a single man Samet was great, but as a father with a wife and two kids Samet has priced itself out of my price range.

Touts are not a real problem. They are pretty low key over there compared to many other places in SEA. lf you are going to Samet, don't forget to call in to Tan Tan Cafe here in Ban Phe and say hello. Any visitors welcome, either on your way to or from.

Myself, I think Koh Samet is cheaper than Koh Chang. Also if you go to Samet, do not forget to say hello to my friend at Baywatch bar on Ao Wongduen.

It's not a girly bar, mate. It's for chilling out and relax.

Good food and cocktails there as well.

From what I saw Koh Samet is a 'bring your own girl' sort of place. The beach is much much much nicer than Pattaya/Jom Tien! Sort of like Hua Hin but without the jellyfish.

I think the prices go up on the weekends. Some friends went there for a week during the low season and were able to rent a nice bungalow for about 500 a night. My wife and I went on a public holiday and had to pay 1500 for the same bungalow !

We decided on Ko Chang, partly because of the above --- a 4 day public holiday would probably empty the wallet. Had a great time - I'll post some piccies within the next few days.
