Can I see WEIRDO movies in LOS?

I was just watching the trailer & getting excited for the brand NEW David Lynch movie "Inland Empire":
    http://-trailers.blogspot.com/2006/1...6-trailer.html

& it made me think, will I bealbe to watch weirdo flicks like the above trailer in Thailand/Chiang Mai, or will I be doomed to watch Thai Ghost/monster movies & sh*tty Tom Cruise flicks for my stay in LOS?

Please let me know! I'm concerned!

they generally don't release minority movies at the big cinemas in Chiang Mai.
    Lido in Bangkok shows them.

the last David Lynch movie I got on DVD easily enough.
    what was it called?
    I forget.
I also bought 'lost highway' a couple of weeks back.

Darn, they don't show foreign art flicks there. Will I beable to get pirated indie flicks @ the night market in CM? I hope so, I was surprised when I was able to score a pirated copy of "The Assassination of Richard Nixon," in China!

You're probably talking about Lynch's "Mulholland Dr," that was even to freaky for me! I couldn't get into that one, maybe I need to watch it again!

I loved "Lost Highway"! I mean what an amazing cast: Richard Pryor & Robert Blake!!!!

This might be a better topic on it's own, but I have MANY "copies" of movies. I don't plan on brining all of them to LOS, but if I brought in 40-50 DVD copies of movies would Thai customs confiscate them, or even worst have me go into a "special" room w/ some guy wearing rubber gloves!?!?!

I just got the Lonely Planet LOS book & I think I found the answer to my question. It says @ Chiang Mai University they have free screenings on Sundays of Bergman & Bunuel type flicks (page 307)!

So that's good news! It makes me think there's a cool local & farang art vibe in Chiang Mai, VERY NICE!

Has anyone attending these screenings? Are they pretty cool?

    Thanx!

    That's all you need dude!

There are a few good shops in Bangkok that sell copied classics and 'arty' movies but in the end downloading is the only way to go.

I'm all about BT & newsgroups! I have a scary collection of mp3's & programs to prove it!

But it's nice to go to the cinema sometimes & check out a good flick. It's also a good way to meet a nice girl who shares similar interests!

Thanks a lot for the tips guys! Happy Holidaze!

Forgot to mention there are movie festivals every now and then. The Bangkok film festival being the largest - tbut places like Goethe Institut and Alliance Francaise in Bangkok have their own movie nights (although they might be horrified if you called them 'movies', the PC term being 'films' ;-)) where you can catch German and French movies subbed in English. It's hit and miss really, unless you are a real French movie buff. Personally I like about 20-30% of the French movies I see, and the rest are just too sleep-inducing.

Three years ago there was a Scandinavian film festival in Chinatown, Bangkok. Also, in I believe they have a yearly European film festival up in Chiang Mai.

There are a few cinemas in Bangkok that screen arthouse type movies as well, the Lido at Siam Square in Bangkok is one. There is also one that was built quite recently, with the explicit purpose of being the main arthouse film venue in Bangkok. I think it is located on RCA, the kiddie disco avenue in Bangkok. Cant remember what it's called, maybe somebody else can recall.

But in the end, nothing beats a free lunch. BitTorrent rules.

Heh, FF, that rings a bell. I keep telling myself to go see to 'arty' places all the time too, got all the info, just never get around to actually going.

Copenhagen had (probably still has) a decent art scene and I was quite involved back then. Somehow I lost momentum when I got here. Weird how that happens.
