Rigger your comment reminded me of a true story.

I was hitching back from the Alps in the 70's. Guy stopped and give me a lift. Talked away he said he had visited England many times. Asked him if he liked it. He said didn't see much as it was usually at night.

Ya...... he had been a Luftwaffe pilot, driving a Junker 88. I had to laugh my dad had been in the RAF. He took me home to Vienna, met his daughter, he asked if I would hitch with her to England. She was a 17year old stunner. Took her home, my dad who had been a guest of the Germans laughed his head off and took us to the pub to meet his mates.

I would very strongly recommend starting from a town or city you can readily sign on the Dole, Newcastle would be an excellent chioce.

From there you could plan your route/itinery to stay in further recognised dole centres to achieve your fortnightly signings on.

Liverpool, Glasgow, Widnes being obvious route candidates, and of course finishing back to Newky.
