Take them something very Malaysian. Perhaps a small piece of Royal Selangor pewter or Malay Batik that suits your budget.

Tell her NOT to bring food items, Australian customs are very very very strict, my friend was fined $200 for trying to bring a packet of dried bananas.

^^ ST, you should tell her to take a valuable historic religious heirloom, such as an old Buddha statue or something. They're illegal to import but your friend will be able to bring something in being a Thai national. They could then sell it on the blackmarket in Sydney and maybe get enough to cover the costs of sinsod to your friends parents

Not trying to sound pedantic, but it's more likely that your friend was fined for failing to declare the packet of bananas.
Had he/she declared the item it would have ended up in the bin and there would have been no fine.

Shawls or sarongs, cloth in general is OK.

That's the kind of thing I always take back.

Anything wood can be a real problem.

Also, fake statues that look like they're amber or what ever, will get very very close scrutiny.

Any organic type food stuff is, as has already been noted, a complet and absolute NO NO.

Good luck and have a great time.

Wow your getting around aren't you, Perth, Krabi and now your friends getting married in Perth.

Anyway the perfect present to impress an Aussie is a slab of beer and a football.
