    Advice on Yogyakarta...

In November, I'll be going to Yogyakarta for 4 or 5 days on business.

Any ideas on flights and accom?

A brief look suggests that Airasia at 10,000 baht return should be okay (how long is the flight - 3 hours or so?). Any better suggestions?

Accom. I need a place close to: University of Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Yogyakarta. Any suggestions, the closer to this place the better; also, what would a general idea on cost be -2,500ish baht per night? More/less, I just want a basic 4 star hotel, even a decnt 3 star would be okay.

Any other issues? Anywhere I should visit? I'll be taking Friday and Saturday for meself to look around.
    Cycling should be banned!!!

    I was there years ago
I regret not visiting Borobudur temple its only about 25 miles away
I think inertia , my old enemy , got the better of me yet again ,
plus too much beer and sick of being the only white man for 300 miles ...

Here are some photos of it anyway.
So get up pre dawn , a taxi there and catch the sunrise !

Buy Batik there. From 30+ years ago I still have 3 or 4 beautiful framed Batik paintings. I too was too lazy to get up to Borobudur. But the wife got up there 2 years ago and her photos are incredible.

Yogja Plaza Hotel is central and good 4 star.

There's a tourist booth at the airport that will search and book any hotel for you. (legit). Even the one 5 star hotel, maybe Sheraton...? is only $70 a night or so. (~2200 baht)

Boroburdor for sure. Busy in middle of the day, about an hours drive. Cost is $10 for expats. ($1 for locals)

Pramban temple nearby and also worth visiting.

Climb Mount Merapi Volcano, if you are feeling fit.

Sultans place and water palace are worth a look (in town).

I'd hire a car, ~$40 per day with driver.

Yogja is smallish (like Chiang Mai)

Malioboro Shopping street has a side street with the Bintang Bar - live music, expats and locals, cheep beer.

Gang Tiga is a dire whore strip, but worth a look.

$25 VOA - must have American $ and must be GOOD/PERFECT quality and very recent number series. (They flat our refuse series A-D, Series E adn F they take but at a redused rate, Series H preferred. No tears or holes or folds.

Full of Batik/ARt shop scammers these days, come and visit my shop, closing down sale, last day free art exhibition. Then you'll buy overpriced cheap batik. But not a dangerous scam, just annoying.

As in Indonesia the starting price when bargaining is not double like here, but 5 to 10 times the selling price. The kids and wife adapted even with it being 9,000+ to the dollar. I gave up.
Dont walk in to the tourist traps, be willing to spend a bit on a piece of fabric. If reputable you can see how they are making it. Its still cheap because of the time to make a good batik painting. I first spent more than any traveller in history to get two Batiks by an artist by the name of Ardi. About 50 bucks each back then. Now he is very famous and his son is carrying on the legacy. But you have to have the time and the will. Its why I did not go to Borobudur.

    Good post willy thanks.

Jakarta Bangkok is 3.5, I'm guessing Bkk-Jogya is the same.

Check Garuda, you can book online.

There's a beach about an hour or an hour and a half (I think) South. Pretty wild and windy. Surfer spot really.

4 -5 days, you could also go to the town of Solo, interesting and about 1-2 hours (i think).

I do not think it is an exaggeration to suggest that Borobordur is to Indonesia as Ankor Wat is to Cambodia.

I didn't have any American $ so they let let me walk unattended through customs and outside to the cash machine. I could have just fucked off and jumped in a taxi.

Usually they closely attend you. But they are Indonesian, so that does not surprise me at all.

You'd be fucked trying to leave the country without an exit stamp. I tried once leaving Thailand without one (I have two passports, and brought the wrong one to the airport) and could not leave, not even after offering 20K cash.

They did on the way back in. I'd lost my lighter and they quickly lit one up for me. Very efficient. (in the terminal)

I don't think there are any direct flights. However, Airasia do Bkk-Bali then Bali to Yog, all for 10,000 baht return. Maybe just one extra day in Yog to see the temple suggested above then 2 or 3 days in Bali? Things are looking up...

Bali's only a 40 minute flight from Jogja, so I'd suggest it's a good option. Stay in either Kuta, Legian or Seminyak.

^ it's a very important International presentation actually, but the conference is only 2 days, so I can spend the weekend wherever I like - especially if it's on the normal flying route anyways.

You are going to need new luggage, so you had better start a thread on what is the best buy.
