There is an onshore-oil facility still there (I think?), that a few Westerners used to work..

More likely the location of the house / property bought for the tilak and her family that had him offed.

Why are the Thai so fascinated by the gruesome? I suppose we all have it within us to gawp, as many do when passing scenes of accidents, but I'm fairly sure those scenes in the video if witnessed by westerners first hand would have been met by expressions of horror and disgust whereas the Thai could be heard to chuckle and laugh at whatever inanity happened to pass through their simpleton chickenheads.

Ultimately, it must resolve to a lack of respect for life as we understand it and I am fairly certain just another symptom of the non occident's inability to empathise with another who is not of their race.

Certainly, sticking it up on You Tube is a disgrace but typically they can never understand why we would find it so. It's simply obscene and as repellent as watching someone take a dump but then, perhaps I'm just being squeamish?

They need it for kicks. They watch violent horror / action films from the age of 2 on VCD, by the time they're adults, it just doesn't thrill them in the same way.

Very good historical park there, but most tourists just stay overnight on their way between Chiang Mai/Bangers.

The Arabs are the same. When Iran Air 655 went down they took great pleasure in showing the body retrieval. Pulling bits of people out of the water, hungry fish still hanging on, nibbling away.

Perhaps this is why they value life so little.

Does the little value they attach to life make them enjoy that style of reporting, or does that style of reporting give them less value to life??

It's probably a bit of both.

Agree with you and I've driven through Kamphaeng Phet Province a couple of times but never considered living there and of course it's just a tad too close to the border for comfort.

Saying that Kamphaeng Phet probably fairs favourably when compared with Isan shitsticksnowhere villages!

I did not watch the video as I have seen enough dead bodies as a volunteer fireman/ERT but I wanted to comment that westerners are so media censored that they are simply "Shocked" when this can be seen for exactly what it is. It is a dead body in a canal. I do not think Thai people carry a lack of respect for a life, they are just not bothered by the site of a deceased person.

As for the youtube video, well you just gotta love the internet, we each chose what we want to watch. The basic respect boundaries were tossed out long ago in all countries.

Who is "he" to them ? Its a dead body. No reason to amp up your emotions.

Up until about 15 years ago the Thai media covered these kind of scenes as well as the horrific vehicle accidents and disasters completely uncensored. Most Thais grew up on those images. Westerners tend to grow up on Hollywood's fairytale versions of death scenarios.

Violent death, dead bodies aren't pleasant to watch, the answers quite simple exercise freedom of choice and don't watch them!

The deceased could come from anywhere, but the killers clearly have local knowledge judging by their choice of site, and their ability to dump the body without being seen.
