Qantas : Engine fault forces jumbo back to Bangkok

Engine fault forces Qantas jumbo back to Bangkok
    Jan 26, 2011

Sydney - A Sydney-bound Qantas flight from Bangkok returned to the Thai capital because of an engine fault on the Boeing 747, a spokesman said Wednesday.

'One of the engines was consuming fuel more quickly than normal,' Australia's AAP news agency quoted a Qantas spokesman as saying. 'Following procedure they took the precautionary decision to return to Bangkok to have the engine inspected.'

The engine will need to be replaced, so the 352 passengers will have to wait until a replacement plane arrives from Sydney.

Tuesday's incident came just hours after a Qantas Boeing 737 flying between Adelaide and Melbourne plunged 8,000 metres after cabin pressure was lost owing to a failure in the air-conditioning system.

The plane landed safely in Melbourne but passengers were put into a panic after the steep dive and the unnerving experience of oxygen masks falling from the ceiling.

Back in 2000, I boarded a flight to Argentina. We had to wait about 1.5 hours because there was a problem with a fuel pump. The faulty pump was replaced.

I applaud Qantas for having the honesty to tell us what the problem was. I will always happily fly Qantas & happily pay the extra cost, provided that they do not adopt the american attitude of 'profit before people'.

I flew from Bangkok to Singapore (TG401) last Sunday and we sat in the plane for an hour past scheduleD take-off time.

When in the air the captain explained there was a serious technical problem and he hoped it didn't return during the flight.........

I just wonder how many planes are in the air with serious problems that nobody on the flight ever find out about.

Delayed 24hours at Gatwick by Phuket Air when they had to replace a fuel pump or something. We all got put up at the Gatwick Hilton (not a nice place).

Phuket Air had one jumbo jet they used for international flights, but after several publicised problems with it they scrapped it.

last time I flew with BA, about 30 minutes before bording the display changed to delayed 60 minutes.

Once were in the air the pilot announced:

"Some of you will have noticed that we left heathrow 65 minutes late, this was because for reasons best known to themselves someone decided to drive a car into one of the engines and I decided I wanted a new plane. I hope to make up the lost time and arrive in bangkok on schedule. But in the mean time I think we should thank the cabin crew for preparing this plane in record time."

Which I interpreted as "Be grateful you got a new plane and don't bitch at the cabin crew"

you mean publicity caused by them being banned from flying in european airspace and the plane being sized by the airport for unpaid bills?
