DERBY aero engine-maker Rolls-Royce has secured an order worth almost a quarter of a billion pounds from a Thai airline.

The £243 million contract for Trent 700 engines has been placed by Thai Airways International.

The engines, which will be made at Rolls-Royce's civil aerospace division in Sinfin, will be used to power seven Airbus A330 aircraft.

The order includes a TotalCare agreement, which will see Rolls-Royce maintain the engines throughout their service life.

The engines will start being delivered next year.

Nick Devall, Rolls-Royce executive vice-president of customer business (civil aerospace), said: "Thai Airways International is a very important customer and we're delighted they've once again demonstrated their confidence in Rolls-Royce.

"The combination of the Trent 700 and the TotalCare support package will deliver to the airline significant reliability and performance benefits to enhance their operation."

Thai Airways International already uses Trent 800 and Trent 500 engines to power some of its fleet.

It has also selected Trent 900s to power its six Airbus A380 aircraft.

Captain Montree Jumrieng, managing director of the airline's technical department, said: "The Trent 700 has again proven to be the best economic and environmental solution for our A330 fleet.

"We have had a long and successful partnership with Rolls-Royce and this latest selection will further strengthen our relationship."

The Trent 700 is the only engine specifically designed for the Airbus A330 and more than 1,000 are now in service or on order.
