What 'normal country' would this be then, Papillion? In the UK, if the labour party were dissolved by a controlled judiciary, their leaders accused of LM/terrorism and stuck in prison, rallies shot down and people detained without recourse to the normal legal procedure, then we'd call it a junta. We don't consider juntas to be 'normal' in England.Quote:

The red rally appears to be a full on tour around Bangkok with anything up to 20,000 taking part.
And they've allowed it...
Why bother having laws....? It gets more ridiculous by the day.

UDD procession to push for leaders' release

United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship supporters will hold a procession tomorrow through areas in central Bangkok where violent incidents between red shirt protesters and security forces took place.
The march is aimed at demanding the release of detained red shirt leaders.
The event is being organised by Sombat Boonngamanong, leader of the Red Sunday Group. He has held several activities in provinces throughout the country to remind supporters of the clashes between UDD protesters and the government.
In total, 92 people - 81 civilians and 11 security officials - were killed in violent incidents during April and May.
The procession of private vehicles and motorcycles will set off from Ratchaprasong intersection at 1pm and end up at Victory Monument at 5pm.
The procession will pass through areas where gun battles occurred between security forces and armed men the government alleged were the militant wing of the UDD. Areas included are Ratchadamri Road, where red shirt Maj Gen Khattiya Sawasdipol was shot and the Din Daeng triangle intersection, where battles raged.
Those joining the process will repeat their calls for the release of UDD key leaders such as Natthawut Saikua and Weng Tojirakan, who were detained on terrorism charges after the rally ended.
Acting city police chief Jaktip Chaijinda said about 1,500 policemen would be deployed to maintain order.

The UDD planned to rally at Democracy Monument and on Ratchadamnoen Road in the morning and planned to hold activities in the afternoon to mark the death of key Red Shirt ally Maj Gen Khattiya Sawasdipol, better known as Seh Daeng, at the entrance of Lumpini Park, near the King Rama VI statue
Gen Khattiya, a hard-line member of the Red Shirts, was shot in the forehead while he was being interviewed by a foreign reporter.
Mr Abhisit said he believed the activities would take place without any problem, and that the national police chief closely monitored and followed up the situation.
However, the premier asked for cooperation from all citizens to help prevent any violence or any third party to take advantage of the opportunity to cause disorder.
National police chief Pol Gen Vichien Poteposri earlier said that about 3,000 police will be deployed at sensitive areas in the Thai capital Sunday.
He said police have estimated that 5,000 to 7,000 UDD Red Shirt supporters will participate in the rally.
Police will be posted at important and sensitive areas including BTS Skytrain stations, MRT underground stations and at the Democracy Monument, which was the scene of a bloody clash between protesters and security personnel on April 10.
Tharit Pengdit, director-general of the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) said the agency will monitor activities of protesters during their planned rally on Sunday while investigators are urged to quickly apprehend 18 terrorist suspects who are still at large.
He said DSI officials have been ordered to closely monitor the planned rally of UDD after intelligence reports suggested earlier that more bombing incidents are in the making while the recent Bang Bua Thong apartment explosion in Nonthaburi province would not stop violence in the country.
There are still groups of ill-intentioned people with heavy weapons who are prepared to create unrest in the country, he said.
Four people were killed and nine were wounded in the apparent bomb-assembling accident at an apartment in Bang Bua Thong on Tuesday. The initial investigation found a bomb-making suspect, who rented the apartment, accidentally killed himself and others.
Mr Tharit said he had ordered DSI officials to quickly arrest 18 other terrorist suspects who escaped arrest.
He said key UDD leaders have fled overseas with their families while some are hiding in Thailand’s neighbouring countries but it is difficult to bring them home for trial as it might affect relations with those countries. (MCOT online news)

Red-shirts Start Gathering at Lumpini Park

Red-shirt supporters have started to gather at Lumpini Park on Rama IV Road.
They gather today to commemorate the losses of lives of their fellow comrades on April 10 when there was a clash with law enforcement officers at the Kokwua intersection.
The group plan to tie red ribbons at Lumpini Park and at Democracy Monument on Rachadamnoen Avenue.

If it's a couple of thousand then nothing too major for the junta.
But, 10k 15k becomes very noticeable. Any more than that must be a big worry. If the reds keep peaceful and the rallies just keep coming and getting bigger then the junta have a problem... If they rallies keep along the lines of the last one, and well away from political associations then the propaganda machine will go to town with anti-royalists and MrT assasination plot stories.
Let's hope for a large, peaceful and mixed class rally.

It will be interesting to see the makeup of the rally. Previously, you and others have been playing the poor farmer after his 500 bhat card, which was always a stupid one, but seemed not to be on display when the middle class Thais were turning up at the last rally with their Fortuners and Camrys... If, the rallies increase in size and show a wide variety of disgruntled Thai citizens from various walks of life then we might suggest that the red struggle is evolving into a beast which is much harder to control... I wonder when the disgruntled Dem and PADites will start joing the cause too; shouldn't be too long now cause this junta has really pushed things beyond their expectations and acceptance levels too.

Supporters of the red-shirt protest movement started to gather around Bangkok's Democracy Monument on Sunday, calling for the release of political prisoners detained for more than four months, reports said.
The atmosphere was animated as thousands of supporters of the anti-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) gathered to mark the fourth anniversary of a military coup in September 2006 that toppled former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
Souvenirs, pictures and VCDs to commemorate the April-May political violence were also sold at the rally.
Police said about 3,300 policemen from provincial police region 1, 2 and 7 and border petrol police would be deployed in the capital to ensure law and order during the red-shirt rally.
Police expected about 5,000 to 7,000 people would turn out to take part in the gathering, scheduled to end at 5pm today.

About 5000 reds are already at Democracy Monument. Traffic is almost at a standstill with several hundred policemen. And the atmosphere is getting livelier by the minute.
Reds now completely surrounded by Riot Control Police . Cheers are LOUD. And roads are now officially blocked.

Went past the red crowd at Lumphini Park this morning. There couldn't have been more than 500 people. Plenty of police though. Everyone was gone when I came back at 2pm.
