Malaysia : Uninhabited isles for sale

Uninhabited isles in Malaysia for sale
    26-09-2010

Malaysia welcomes foreigners who wish to buy or develop any of its uninhabited islands as this could help stimulate the country's economy and bring in more tourist dollars.

Foreigners can develop these islands as joint ventures with locals or even build their homes there and make Malaysia their second home, said Tourism Minister Ng Yen Yen.

She stressed, however, that state governments would have the final say on such transactions as land is a state matter.

"We are, however, open to this idea. It will help open up our economy and provide more opportunities to Malaysians as well," she said, adding that there were 1,007 islands around the country with the majority uninhabited.

Dr Ng, on a promotion tour of Japan, was speaking to a group of Japanese investors, travel agents and operators, and airline representatives in Osaka.

She said Malaysia enjoyed political stability, was not exposed to natural disasters and was a reasonably cheap place to live in.

Seems like the reputation that foreigners "having more money than sense" is spreading...

Never mind the minor inconvenience whilst living on your island paradise when a Tsunami flattens it.

None the less, again proves Malaysia's land ownership rights are sensible as compared to the xenophobic practices in Thailand.

Could be 500 or could be tomorrow. Really doesn't matter though. The last one is well remembered so Ms Ng's statement would been better had she not mentioned the no natural disaster bit. Some might notice.

    ^^
    I just made a rapid calculation :

Average price for an island : US$2 to $4 millions

Face of my wife when I'll tell her that I sold our home to buy an island in Malaysia : priceless !

Sounds just the thing for many folks. The initial cost of the property is just the beginning. Now you have your tropical dream island. No power, no/or little fresh water, no house, no nearby food sources, no access to build one without a boat, no security when you leave and depending on where the island is, no communication infrastructure.

All in all, a very expensive lifestyle.

But you might get your very own personal "witch doctor" thrown in and lets face it, the way the National Health service is going back in the UK you wouldn't be on a long waiting list!

My apologies. Being far to pragmatic for a balmy Sunday afternoon. Enjoy.
