Aussie protester claims he was beaten in Thai prison

Aussie protester claims he was beaten in Thai prison
    Erik Jensen

An Australian man deported from Thailand after supporting anti-government Red Shirt protesters says he was beaten in prison and feared the Thai government would plant drugs on him.

Conor Purcell arrived in Sydney this morning after more than three months in prison.

He said he intended to return to Thailand but was critical of the support he had received from the Australian government while in prison.

"I'm going to go through the FOI Act to find out what exactly was happening."

He said he was beaten by seven other prisoners in an "ordered assault" and denied medical attention for almost two weeks afterwards.

After the attack he could not walk and had blood in his urine, he said.

He said he was kept in a cell with almost 40 prisoners, some convicted murderers awaiting appeal.

"On the second day, they had seven criminals beat the living shit out of me," he said.

"It was the most cowardly assault you could imagine. They went crazy on my spine, my back, my ribs, my kidneys.

"They [the Thai government] could plant whatever they wanted on me."

Mr Purcell - who accepted political charges against him but did not plead guilty - said he did not know a lot about Thai politics before he became involved with the Red Shirt but felt compelled to help after seeing the violence at protests in April.

"I had to speak out against what I'd seen ... what I saw on April 10 was absolutely horrendous. Compared to the Bloody Sunday massacre [in Northern Ireland] this was way worse, this was incredible," he said.

"I am almost certain they will prevent me from returning. I will do whatever I can ... and then try to go back to Thailand."

Mr Purcell was met by a group of about 15 supporters from Thai Red Australia, carrying banners that called him a hero and welcomed him home.

"Welcome home Conor Purcell," read one poster. And, on the reverse, referring to Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva: "Abhisit is a tyrant. We don't want murderer PM. We don't want mafia ruler government in Thailand."

Ordered, bollocks. Probably spontaneous. No doubt he was whinging about everything and the others gave him a kicking for being a right wanker.

Purcell, dressed in brown prison clothes and shackled for his appearance before a Thai labour court judge, told reporters he was assaulted in jail a week ago.

"I was bashed by seven people - pre-planned bashing, ordered bashing - with sticks by seven armed people beat the crap out of me in jail so they could move me to maximum security and put me .... in chains like this," Purcell said.

He said he'd suffered "body spasms" following the beating and when in a maximum security cell with 30 other men.

Prison sources told AAP Purcell had been bashed by prison trustees with bamboo sticks, inflicting welts and bruising to his back and shoulders.

But his lawyer, Siriporn Muangsrinun, said his health had recovered.

"He's OK, he's OK," Siriporn said.

Why would he not know about Blood Sunday. If he had any interest, the amount of published material, documentaries and movies would fill a small library Then most recently the full scale investigation (which took years) was finally published and the army was held fully responsible for shooting unarmed civilians who were trying to run away from them. This incident has been studied and analyzed to death for Christ sake. To anyone with an open mind the comparison is valid in many ways.

I would be complaining too if I was expecting a fortnight in the Hilton and got this treatment instead.

I think a quick letter to young Miss Paris about this is called for.

What does age have to do with it? I know plenty about it from reading and I was not even born when it happened. I also know plenty about the 2 world wars, the Battle of Waterloo, the US Civil War and Dunkirk 1588 which preserved the independence of England from the Spanish invasion.

Do you only know about events that have happened during your lifetime?

I once saw a fight in a nightclub but I never felt the same compulsion.

That was what I was thinking too, he should learn a lesson. Or at least wait until a different government are in power, he will probably be given a special status visa then.

who couldn't each get $30 together to have brought him back a fortnight ago.

Deportation - surely there are some rules re when one can come back - couldn't just hop on the next available flight?

There was a Norwegian guy who appeared quite a few times on the UDD stage and gave speeches of support. Nothing happened to him. Maybe he went back to Norway before the shit hit the fan?? Anyway why is everybody calling this Ozzie names? Oh right, he believed in something (rightly or wrongly) unlike some of the poster on here who seem to believe in nothing. Better to spit poison and spout profanity than have a reasoned argument....very civilized.

Because the stupid bastard has no right getting involved in a uniquely Thai problem.

He's only a visitor to Thailand and to get up on a stage and start talking shit was asking for trouble, he got what he deserved.

If he was in Australia banging on about our foked up politics fair enough but there's no excuse for attempting to get involved in Thai politics.

    An arsehole at best.
