Briton confesses to brutal killing girlfriend in Phuket
Published on Aug 04 , 2005
Phuket - A man has confessed to brutally killing his British girlfriend in Phuket and attempted to kill himself out of guilt.
Paul Chetwynd-Talbot, sought for the murder of his girlfriend, Debra O'Hanlon, who was found dead on Tuesday afternoon, turned himself in to the police Wednesday night.
Pol Col Teeraphol Tipjaroen, Superintendent of Kathu Police Station, told Phuket Gazette that Talbot had come to the front of the police station at about 8pm last night and had sat there doing nothing until a police officer asked him if he needed something.
"The officer walked up to him and asked whether he wanted to report something to the police and he said, yes, he was the one who had killed Debra," Col Teeraphol said.
"He said that he had tried to commit suicide by cutting his wrists after he killed Debra in the room [the couple were sharing in Nanai Rd].
"This explains why we found so much blood at the scene of the murder. There were deep wounds in his wrists, the tendons were slashed and he had lost a lot of blood. He looked a wreck; no one could recognize him," Col Teeraphol added.
Col Teeraphol said that Chetwynd-Talbot, when asked where he had been since the murder, told police that he had been sitting on the beach or walking aimlessly along the sand.
He was charged with murder and taken for treatment at Wachira Phuket Hospital

KIRSTY JONES CASE: Family to visit murder scene 5 years on
Published on August 04, 2005
Police may review evidence after much criticised investigation into slaying, rape
The family of murdered backpacker Kirsty Jones is preparing to fly to Bangkok as authorities say they will fully review the case, the BBC has reported on its website.
The 23-year-old from Tredomen, near Brecon in Wales, was raped and strangled at a guesthouse in Chiang Mai on August 10, 2000. She was on a two-year trip round the world at the time.
Five years after the murder, Kirsty’s killer remains at large. The Thai police investigation has been heavily criticised.
Kirsty’s mother Sue and brother Gareth will be accompanied by two officers from Dyfed-Powys police for talks with Thai officials. They will fly out on Sunday, the BBC report said.
Initially they will meet Royal Thai Police and staff from the British embassy in Bangkok, before visiting the Aree guesthouse in Chiang Mai, where Kirsty was murdered. It will be the first time that Kirsty’s family has been to Thailand.
Kirsty was three months into a two-year trip around the world when raped and murdered at the guesthouse. The police investigation has been characterised by incompetence with Thai officers criticised after the murder scene was contaminated and vital forensic evidence lost.
Speaking to the BBC before making her first visit to the scene of her daughter’s murder, Sue Jones said: “We’re going to Thailand because it’s the fifth anniversary of the killing and because the Thai police have agreed to review the case. This is a major breakthrough and one of the reasons we’re going”.
She added: “We’re going to Chiang Mai to visit the guesthouse for personal reasons – we’re going to where Kirsty was.”
It is hoped the visit will spark new evidence which, five years on, could lead to the killer.
“We are very grateful the Thai police have agreed to do this,” Mrs Jones added. She said that the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office had been “very supportive”.
Roger Williams, MP for Brecon and Radnorshire and a family friend, said: “I believe there’s a change in Thailand at the moment.
“The direction given to the Royal Thai Police is to get on and be aware that the murderer could be either a Thai national or a foreign visitor – not to leave any stone unturned and certainly not to draw any conclusions without the proper evidence being provided.”
During the investigation into Jones’ murder, a number of men, both Thai and foreign, were arrested but released without charge.

Medication may have caused British man to jump to his death
Boonlua Chatree
Police were called to a bar in Soi Yamato around 8 p.m. on July 27 following a report of a foreigner jumping off the fourth floor of the building.
Officers arrived to find the naked body of Derek Edwards, 42, from the UK on the road as crowds gathered in the soi. The deceased was taken to the forensic hospital for examination.
Piyawan Booncharoen, 27, the deceased’s wife, told police that Edwards was an alcoholic and had tried to give up drinking for Buddhist Lent. He had visited a hospital to help him with the addiction. Doctors gave him medication to assist with the process.
She said that over the previous three days, Edwards would run around naked and that on one occasion police were called in to detain him. He was doing the same when he ran to the fourth floor of the bar building and jumped.
Witnesses in the area, both Thai and foreign, gave similar accounts of the incident. Officers went to the man’s room where they found medication that they kept as evidence.

Heroin found in dead Australian in Thailand
August 9, 2005 - 2:40PM
Traces of heroin were found in the body of an Australian man who collapsed and died after a long drinking session in a Thai guesthouse bar in the northern city of Chiang Mai, police said today.
Charles Clayton Burgess, 38, of Western Australia, was found dead yesterday beside American tourist Scott Ray Sturgess, 42, of San Diego, California.
The pair had been drinking heavily and police initially thought the pair had died from alcoholic poisoning.
But today a police surgeon reported that heroin had been found in the nostrils and nasal tracts of the dead men.
Traces of the drug were also found on paper lying near the bodies at the Poombim beer bar and guesthouse owned by Mr Burgess.
Mr Burgess had been working in Chiang Mai as a trader, marketing souvenirs with his Thai wife. They were married in Thailand about a year ago.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Boonlert Jantanoodej said the two men had taken part in a heavy drinking session with other foreigners in the ground-floor bar.
They are reported to have started drinking at lunchtime on Sunday and were last seen still imbibing together 12 hours later.
Early yesterday a maid at the guesthouse found the men's bodies lying on the floor.
Chiang Mai is close to the Golden Triangle, the drug-producing region where the borders of Burma, Laos and Thailand meet, and the source of most of the heroin trafficked between the region and the rest of the world.

German man discovered dead inside his Soi Beokeow Apartment.
Police Sub-Lieutenant Santipon from Pattaya Police Station was called to Marine Tree Place in Soi Beokoew after staff reported a foul odor coming from one of the rooms. Inside room number 304 the badly decomposed body of Mr. Marcus Wagner aged 37 from Germany was found. Initial inspections of the body and the room suggested the man may have not been alone when he died. Around the room were many packets of condoms and lubricating jelly and also he was on medication prescribed by the Pattaya International Hospital for Insomnia. An initial theory from Police states that the man may have taken a woman from a bar and either during or after sexual intercourse he suffered a heart attack. Police are now awaiting the results of a post mortem examination and are appealing for any Thai woman who may recognize this man to come forward and assist Police with their enquiries. Representatives from the German Embassy in Bangkok are also assisting Police with this case.

Jilted girl leaps to her death
Nopniwat Krailerg and Saksit Meesubkwang
The body of Camelia Holder, 24, a Thai-Australian was found by police after she had committed suicide by jumping from Nakornping Condominium in Soi Ratchapleuk on Huay Kaew Road.
It was learned that Camelia lived with her Australian father and Thai mother in Nakornping Condominium. She had just arrived from Australia three weeks ago but was depressed as she had no friends and could not speak Thai.
Her parents informed the police that she had a boyfriend in Australia who had broken up with her recently. This caused depression for which she took medication.
Before her death leap she had gone out with her parents but asked to walk back to the condo alone. After 20 minutes, she jumped from the 18th floor of the building. The parents did not suspect foul play.
:(
OK I admit this one shouldn't be in this thread, but I feel sure next time he may succeed :)
