    Rare Buddhist flower found under nun's washing machine
    A rarely seen Buddhist flower, which blossoms every 3,000 years, has been discovered under a nun's washing machine

    Rarely seen Buddhist Udumbara flowers, which blossom every 3,000 years, was found under a washing machine in Lushan Mountain, Jiangxi province, China Photo: REX
    The Udumbara flower was found in the home of a Chinese nun in Lushan Mountain, Jiangxi province, China.
    The rare Youtan Poluo or Udumbara flower, which, according to Buddhist legend, only blooms every 3,000 years, measures just 1mm in diametre.

    Miao Wei, 50, was cleaning when she discovered the cluster of white flowers under the washing machine.
    At first she thought the barely-there stems were worm eggs, however, the next day she discovered that the stems had grown 18 white tiny flowers on top and smelled "fragrant".
    Local temples believe the mini blooms are specimens of the miraculous Youtan Poluo flower - called "Udumbara" or "Udambara" in Sanskrit, meaning "an auspicious flower from heavenhttp://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/china/7345137/Rare-Buddhist-flower-found-under-nuns-washing-machine.html .

    Lotus Sutra;

    As the Buddhas of the three periods of time
    In such a manner spoke the Dharma,
    So do I likewise now expound
    The undiscriminated Dharma.
    All Buddhas come into the world
    But rarely, and are hard to meet;
    And when they appear in the world,
    It’s hard for them to speak the Dharma.
    Throughout countless ages, too,
    It’s difficult to hear this Dharma.
    And those who can hear this Dharma
    Such people too, are rare,
    Like the udumbara flower,
    In which all take delight,
    Which the gods and humans prize,
    For it blooms but once in a long, long time.
    So one who hears this Dharma, gives joyful praise,
    With even just a single word,
    Has thereby made offerings,
    To all the Buddhas of the three periods of time.
    Such people are extremely rare.
    Rarer than the udumbara flower.
    All of you should have no doubts,
    For I am the Dharma King;
    I declare to the assembly:
    I use only the path of One Vehicle,
    To teach and transform Bodhisattvas.
    There are no Sound Hearer Disciples.
    Shariputra, all of you,
    the Sound Hearers and Bodhisattvas,
    Should know that this wondrous Dharma
    Is the secret essence of all Buddhas

    OP never said he was. It just says that the story goes that the flower blooms every 3,000 years. Besides, if you know know enough about old pointy head to call him Lord then you should know that he was able to remember all his past lives, maybe he came across it then. Anyway, from the casual references to it in the Lotus Sutra it seems it was a well known story 2,500 years ago (approximately ).

    They got a snapshot from 3,000 years ago to verify this bloom? Sorry...ya, that's cool. I had some plants like that around my house that the Thai neighbours dug up as weeds.

    My first thought when I read the article was to wonder how much people were going to be charged to see the flowers. Perhaps I'm too cynical

    well why not ? - there are thousands of pieces of the original cross , paintings , statues etc that weep blood , numerous saints of proven miracles , divine voices , Joan of Arc ,Mary Baker Eddy , Andy Devine , Mormans who discovered a rock at the back of someones garden , the Brothers Grimm , Count Dracula, Alice in wonderland , The St James bible as edited to suit Henry the 8th , Allah , Mohammed , tai kwon do ,and a host of other bullshit , why ridicule this?
    Correction , delete Tai kwon Do as bullshit.

    +1 for fungi or some sort of mold. You dont see too many plants with flowers growing in the dark. Under a washing machine....let me see dark, warm, wet, yep its mold all right. People are dumb.

    It's a Thai version of Lily of the Valley, innit? Very sweet smelling. Very biblical I think, but that would only be 2,000 years. I stayed at some monasteries -- nobody had washing machines...

    Ya, I saw the movie.
