The navy will push for the purchase of the submarines, priced at 20 billion baht each, when there is enough money available.[quote]

Foking never ceases to amaze me when a country that has a minimum wage of 185 baht a day, no social security system and people still living on the streets can justify spending huge amounts of money on foking submarines when there is no real need to.

I mean, how about looking after there own people first and when every bastard is living in a condo and driving a Merc then buy submarines. Suppose that goes for the rest of the world as well.

Yeah but the forward thinkers don't want it looking good on the seabed.

Gulf of Thailand is marginal for sure. Average depth 45m. Shallow water makes for poor sonar performance as well.

Andaman sea is only practical place to use a sub. Probably a good idea to have a few patrolling there. Never know when Sri Lanka might mount an invasion upon the advice of a certain Thai adviser.

Keeping up with neighbors is very important. We don't know what what will happen in the world over the next century. Things could go pear-shaped very quickly if world resources fail to meet the needs of increasing populations. Massive destruction and warfare could occur. If other countries in the region are gearing up for a possible defense of their nations with sub technology it is important that Thailand does the same.
    Please pass the donuts.

If Thailand is serious about defending the nation, far better ways to spend the money than on submarines. Air and coastal defense systems are far better place to spend the money. None of Thailand's neighbors have the capability to invade Thailand. India or China could but if either attempted it they would have war with the other one.

Thailand's only assurance they won't be invaded is maintaining a diplomatic balance via defense cooperation with the big powers.

Thailand spends about $11 billion a year on military. Far too much for a country that has really no external threats. The government should be looking at major cuts. A good start would be eliminating several general officer positions. Thai military has nearly double the "general" officers the US has. Go figure. But we all know to do so would make the politicians stay in office quite short.

News has leaked out that this is the sub the Thais can afford at the moment :

Pedal-powered submarine to go on the market

A pedal-powered submarine capable of diving up to 30 metres has been developed by a Russian company.

    Published: 10:28AM GMT 02 Jan 2010

The craft can be powered by two people with no specialist training and moves at about walking pace.
The pedallers sit side by side in the craft, most of which is made from a special acrylic glass.
Its designers say this will give occupants "spectacular underwater views".

Apart from two sets of pedals, controls are limited to a steering wheel and a few buttons to make operating the submarine as simple as possible.

The Navy will be giving it secret tests at a well known water park in Bangkok before making up its mind.

If they buy it off the French (Like their aircraft carrier) it just won t work.............

n if they actually think they can stop jonny foreigner.....

Fonzi has this rather amusing deconstruction on the thai media and the lack of knowledge of Admiral Kamthorn of the Royal Thai Navy. Here

    here is a sample

First, Malaysia and Singapore don't have Russian submarines. The very fact that the Admiral of the Thai Navy doesn't know what submarines Malaysia and Singapore have is frightening.

Second, the 20 billion baht price tag per submarine is an interesting figure.

Vietnam bought 6 Russian subs for 1.8 billion dollars plus all kinds of goodies thrown in for good measure.

That is 300 million dollars per sub.

From what I heard, about half the Thai fleet would already be submarines if they ever left dock.

I had to laugh when I was in Hau Hin. At a pier there was a fast patrol boat tied up. On deck there was a twin tub washing machine lashed to the sterns flagpole. Aside of that was a large blue plastic barrel. I assume for fresh water ? Very efficient looking.

It's very sad that people who are guests in this Country and chose to live here can make some of the hateful and silly comments contained in this thread. For those who have never met any of them, the reality is that most of the high level Officers in the Thai Navy have degrees from American Universities and are very intelligent people.

    You are joking, right.

Pol Pot was educated in the west, Ian Paisley had a degree from the USA and as you say many of the Thai Navy officers had their education there.

Fact is they all might have had privileged education but all have proven to the world that they have no common sense.

For a start the point of having a submarine is stealth; but the waters around Thailand are far too shallow for a submarine and its shadow would be easily spotted.

Secondly, as Fonzi quoted “the very fact that the Admiral of the Thai Navy doesn't know what submarines Malaysia and Singapore have is frightening”.

Thirdly the 20 billion baht (US$ 600M) price tag per submarine is very odd when Vietnam has just bought 6 diesel-electric Kilo/ Project 636 Class fast attack submarines from the Russians for US$300M each fully equipped.

I think some of the post here is justified and I think you are a bit lost in you’re post saying that these people are education and intelligent. They are also very corrupt, stupid and greedy.

    Buy Quality Buy British (subs)

Well, the Thais can't do any worse than the Canadian Navy which purchased 4 diesel-powered mothballed British subs which were rusted throughout, with one catching fire whilst being delivered resulting in death. What a mess.

    Dr. Bob,

The Thai Prime Miister was educated at Eton and Oxford. I think that maybe he bought the degree because he sure as hell does not seem like he is playing with a full deck?
What makes you think that Thai Navy Officers have to pass their degree courses to join the navy here, its all smoke and mirrors if you are from the right well to do family you will get an Officers commission it just depends how much your family pays.
This is not thed same as West Point or Quantico you can buy anything you like here if yoou show the right money.
