A major US-based entertainment company has confirmed plans for a huge new movie town in Chiang Mai province, with initial investment put at eight billion baht.

Creative Kingdom Inc, a creator of themed design architecture and destinations, said it will build a 175-acre mixed-use movie studio and residential development to be know as Chiang Mai-Wood (CNX-Wood).

Once completed, the sprawling complex would house the state-of-the-art CNX Movie World Studios -- a series of film production studios, animation facilities and special effects laboratories -- and include residential neighborhoods, public infrastructure and facilities, theme parks , restaurants and replicas of major tourist destinations around the world, the company press statement said.

Creative Kingdom chief executive officer Eduardo Robles said his company will make CNX-Wood the most advanced mixed-use destination in the world.

“The new CNX Movie World Studios will serve as the hub for Asia’s booming film industry and become one of the premier destinations for the world’s movie makers," he said.

The 175-acre mixed-use movie studio and residential development would take seven years to complete.

It would be completed over five stages, beginning with the film studios.

I think there's quite a bit of artistic talent to be found in Los, the adverts and package designs are usually more creative and fun than elsewhere. Might be something if they can hire local talents and provide good infrastructure.

Creative Kingdom was founded in 1997 by 3 perons, including Thanu Boonyawatana, who got his degree in architecture from Oklahoma U in 1997. It appears that he has not spent much time in Thailand in the last 30 year, dividing his time between L.A. and Dubai, where C.K. built Palm City, a cyber and gaming resort/community. The core of the project in C.M. will be cyber City. I suspect that mot of C.K. will be animation facilities and casinos. I did like Mr. Boonyawatana' quote that his firm builds for his clients (who in Thai government?) and not for the people, so expect fantasy/historical conceptions of C.M., not reality (maybe, they will re-build C.M., around 1500 A.D.).

I agree that that's all shite, but is there any reason why good movies couldn't be processed here?

^^ But part of this is surely because of lack of facilities, hence the 8 bn baht injection into the industry here.

Thailand bought a state of the art French aircraft carrier and British Harrier jets, so why doesn't it have a World Class Navy?

Thailand has the biggest airport terminal building in the World, and the World's tallest control tower, so why isn't Thailand's airport even in the top ten airports in the World?

Toxic did spend some time in Dubai, as did Boonyawatana, so it's possible. I think the facilities are mainly going to be for animation, so very few actors need apply for work.

Quite, more of a processing plant than a studio. Doesn't seem unreasonable but this is Thailand, so there's bound to be a sub-text.

There's been plenty of big budget and decent films made here. I'd say on average theres more shite pumped out than decent films in any country that produces them.

The vast majority of decent ones have been films about the region thus have to be shot here to appear authentic.

LOS has a considerable history of top notch foreign films shot here.....obviously, you're not aware of this.

I thought "The Beach" was crap as well

Could be good, but the whole announcement has a bit too much of the PR ring to it. Ya'll might wait for groundbreaking ... 8 billion, even in baht, is serious money.
