Finland : Many Thai Women Living Underground

HS: Many Thai Women Living Underground
published yesterday 04:08 PM, updated today 05:46 AM

    Image: YLE

As many as half of all Thai women in Finland are living underground and outside the safety net of society, writes the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat. The paper borrows from a new Interior Ministry report that claims over a hundred women from Thailand suffer domestic violence or are in the sex trade.

However, between 800 and 1,200 women from Thailand lead a presumably satisfactory life as a housewife, the paper notes. But many suffer oppression from violent partners or are forced to work in the sex trade at massage parlours. One out of ten women do not have a permanent address or even a residence permit.

Two years ago, following an uproar concerning massage parlours, Interior Minister Anne Holmlund asked for a report on measures to improve the position of Thai women. A report written by a senior inspector at the Ministry, Tiina Pesonen, says the actual number of women estranged from society is still hard to determine.

Those coming to Finland by marriage cannot participate in official integration programmes and often their partners even prevent their wives from doing so, the reports adds.

Violence is common in Thai-Finnish families, the report claims. This is often why many women seek refuge away from home in the sex trade. They fear divorce as this could lead to residence permits being revoked. Often women are unaware that a new residence permit can be obtained after divorce or for a valid humanitarian reason, the report says.

The report calls for improved police action to help Thai women facing domestic violence and to prevent them falling into the sex trade by assisting with new residence permit applications.

Helsingin Sanomat writes the Police Division of the Interior Ministry will draw up guidelines aimed at helping Thai women who face domestic violence.

These articles always want to portray these women as "victims" of some sort. Hell, in Finland they're the lucky ones living underground, since that means they don't have to pay taxes. I understand from Fins who have visited here that the tax rate in Finland is close to socialism.

I am sure the Thai government will respond by drawing up guidelines aimed at helping farangs who face poisoning, beatings, shootings, dismemberment, threats and deception. Protection against having a financial colonic would be awesome as well!

Is Col Pol Somcahi worried about us like Helsingin is????

I'm from the Swedish speaking part of Fin. Consider myself much more Swedish than Finnish. Just because my passport says Finland doesn't make me 100% Finnish. Lived in Sweden for many of my younger years.

I was actually born in Oulu my family moved to England when I was two years old, I've only been back two or three times, and only once as an adult.

It struck me as quite an egalitarian place, obviously taxes are quite high but as a visitor you nlyget to scratch the sruface. It seemed quite a nice place but talking to my cousins they said violence, gun crime and suicide is quite high and there has been a noticeable influx of Russian gangsters.

Personally I'm not sure how the Thai's would get on there. Even in May it was that cold my balls ached and the 9 month winters would try the hardest of souls, let alone people from a country where the sun shines 12 months a year.

    Cheers

But it is the same anywhere you go, to which ever country that the immigrant woman is in.

Any immigration lawyer in the states will jump in if you are divorcing an immigrant bride and will say all of thei shit and they usually go for that too as it is her word again yours and usually you will have no experience in it so you are an easy touch.
When the Mex tried that shit on me I had 3 Xwifes and a deposition from the 4th in court that it was bullshit and I was never abusive to a woman. I have remained good friends with all my x wives. except the Mex.
I know 3 Thai that have married older farang and they have got a divorce after a couple of years for abuse and that way they get to stay.
seems like the courts would finally figure it out. Bound to be some, but not every one.

Read and learn, Edward . . . and if you don't believe me then read Scandinavian's post . . . oh dear . . . you look a right prat now, eh?

Finland was and is not considered part of Scandinavia, ethnically, linguistically nor historically. Soem easily seen examples are Finnair as opposed to SAS (Scandinavian Airlines), didn't use the Kronor, has no royal family, is a Slavic country etc . . . too many examples to list.

Been in Scandinavia many, many times while I was working in Amsterdam and Paris in charge of Scandinavia/UK/Ireland

But don't believe me . . . read or ask the poster below you . . . he just gave you the answer as well. Have a nice day!

I've met quite a few Swedish Fins or Finish Swedes (?) and they, like you, are very adamant about being Swedish . . . it's actually not that difficult to differentiate a Swede from a 'typical' Finn.

(Though they both love to drink!!)

I don't know Peter, From the way it is worded maybe they can't because of the language barrier and by the further statement that "their partners even prevent them from doing so"

But there is domestic abuse almost everywhere, here as well as Mexico and Finnland and USA, so no where is any different from the other really when it comes to that and most is caused by alcohol abuse, but it is a lot of times from the wife abusing her drunken husband and both drunk and dukking it out.
My wife said her husband of 15 years never abused her but was just a worthless bastard and always drunk if he did work it was only for jug money, the neighbors confirmed that to me too, and I can tell by the way her son was wanting to live his life that it must have been so.

Underground is the only warm place in Finland. Do these Thai chicks have to dig their own burrows or are they provided by social security? If living underground is good enough for hobbits and gnomes it should be good enough for illegal immigrants.

It's not as straight forward as that, the Russians were invading, there were divides, a lot of finns had strong socialist inclinations and some fucked off over the border into Russia at the end of the war so they could live under a Communist regime rather than work for Nokia.

    Cheers

Very true - my paternal grandfather volunteered to go to Finland to fight the Russians in the 1939-40 winter war, and then returned to Norway only to find himself joining the resistance movement fighting the Germans a few months later.

In 1939 the Bolsheviks were considered a bigger threat than Nazism, as Stalin had a far worse track record than Hitler did at that time.
