Damn shame. My condolences to all those who suffered loss of life. Burning to death is the last way I'd ever want to go.
Not being too familiar with Pattaya, davethailand, how close was this to your place?

About 5 or 6 klm away at the other end of town, luckily there are'nt too many ajoining buildings where it was, if it was in walking st it could have taken many buildings with it.Originally Posted by Tippaporn

Not if its locked from the inside with an easy way to open it if needed.Originally Posted by stroller

Surely we've all used this type of push-bar to open an exit door? You can't open it from the other side:
I can picture the Thai owners standing around scratching their heads with that "how did that happen " look on their face that they get when something bad happens to them such as when a pick up truck full of people crashes and the bodies are all over the road. Driver stands there with a look of bewilderment on his face like he wasn't expecting it to happen.
I was in this club in March on my wife's birthday. The place is (was) ok, as far as Thai clubs go. As you entered, there was a big room for a band on the right. On the left, another room, not quite so big for techno and trance (I didn't go in there). In the back, near the toilets, there was a smaller room (but still big) for more techno and trance, but with some dancing girls on stage, who had skimpy bathing suits on.
All 3 rooms were packed and I can see how people could have gotten trapped and or trampled during a fire.
This is one of the new clubs in that area and I'm sure that the others will be looked at as for their fire worthiness. This story will probably make international news, but I don't hold out hope for much change after the excitement dies down. It will be TIT again.
More like, "Shit!! Just think about how much money I'm going to loose over this!" And then, "Get those dead and injured out of here so I can rebuild and do it all over again." Then handsome payments to the various officials to get it all up and running and in 6 months (or less), business as usual.Originally Posted by mrsquirrel
I'd like to think otherwise, but this is the most likely scenario.
Why stop there. Surely someone must have given this place a licence to operate. Did they ensure that proper and clearly marked fire exits where in place?Originally Posted by RDN
I am sure heads are going to roll on this one. First the fire department, then the city hall, they the mayor, then.......this will go all the way to the top!!!
Or, a few bahts will change hands, a scapegoat will be found, all will be forgotten and it's back to business in a matter of weeks.
Hmmm, this being Thailand, which is the likelier scenario?
Any error in tact, fact or spelling is purely due to transmissional errors...
it was a good disco too - had couple of sections - hip hop plus techno rooms.Originally Posted by dirtydog

Seven killed in Pattaya blaze
Seven people were killed and about 50 were injured last night when fire engulfed a building in Pattaya that houses several entertainment venues, police said.
The fire started at about 9pm in the building, which is located on Pattaya No 3 Road in Chon Buri's Bang Lamung district.
A number of the victims are thought to be employees of the entertainment venue's discotheque, pub and cocktail lounge, said Police Colonel Somnuek Janket, superintendent of the Pattaya police station.
It was not confirmed last night whether any customers were among those injured.
Five of the victims - four women and one man - were pronounced dead after being admitted to Bang Lamung Hospital in Chon Buri. The sex of the other victims, who died inside the pub, remained unknown.
When the fire began, there were around 300 customers in the entertainment venues and stage shows were being performed.
The venue normally caters for between 300 and 500 visitors every day, including foreigners, local residents said.
Most of the victims are believed to have died from suffocation and those injured suffered from burns, police said.
Rescue workers said they believe all of the building's surviving occupants were evacuated.
The fire was extinguished but police were unable to enter the compound for inspection as the building was still smouldering.

I know that I am late in posting this but thought you would like to know. I wake up early every morning about 0430 and turn the TV to CNN. This is where I first saw the news concerning a fire in a Thailand resort area.
I then turned on the computer and went to TV. Nothing. I went to CNN.com. Nothing. Well, it was early in the morning, I thought...
Next, I went to TD and what did I find? News of the accident. While the tragedy is terrible, congratulations is due to TD for being (as far as I know) the first on the web with the news.
*Recalling the facts* However, with all fairness PCN may have been first, but we were close!
