    Tigers kill Singapore zoo cleaner

    Tigers kill Singapore zoo cleaner

White tigers are popular in zoos because of their unusual colouration

A cleaner at Singapore Zoo has died after being mauled by three tigers.

Nordin Bin Montong was attacked by the white Bengal tigers after crossing a moat surrounding their enclosure. He was reportedly acting erratically.

Zookeepers raised the alarm after they heard the screams of horrified visitors.
They managed to distract the tigers and pull Mr Nordin away but he died of his injuries on the way to hospital. Police are investigating the incident.

The Straits Times newspaper in Singapore says witnesses saw the cleaner climb into the enclosure and wade through the 10m (33-foot) wide moat.

He then approached the tigers with a broomstick and a bucket.

According to the paper, the largest tiger lunged at Mr Nordin who fell immediately and recoiled into a foetal position.

    Erratic

He was throwing things around and passing comments like 'goodbye, you won't see me again'
    Director of Zoology, Biswajit Guha.

Officials at the zoo say the cleaner had been seen earlier behaving erratically.

"Police are still investigating. We are not able to say exactly what happened," said the assistant director of zoology, Biswajit Guha.

"But he was throwing things around and passing comments like 'goodbye, you won't see me again'," said Mr Guha.

An Australian couple visiting the zoo told the Straits Times they had seen Mr Nordin shouting and throwing things as he walked past a crocodile earlier in the day.

Singapore Zoo has closed the white tiger exhibit as a precautionary measure.

White tigers maul man to death

Three white tigers mauled a Malaysian to death in Singapore's zoo after the man jumped into their enclosure, a zoo official said.

Nordin Bin Montong, 32, a Malaysian working as a cleaner at the zoo, leapt into the moat of the white tiger exhibit and was attacked, said Biswajit Guha, assistant director of zoology at the Singapore Zoo in a statement.

The noise from the attack caught the attention of zookeepers nearby and they eventually managed to distract the tigers and rescue Nordin.

"Keepers managed to separate the worker from the tiger. While waiting for the ambulance, our vets attended to him," said Guha.
"The worker tragically succumbed to his wound."

Singapore's Straits Times newspaper said on its website that Nordin was seen behaving in an agitated manner before he fell into the moat.
Terrified visitors near the section watched the vicious attack in horror and screamed, the paper said.

According to conservation group WWF, there are about 4,000 tigers left in the world and they are considered an endangered species.

White tigers are even rarer because they suffer from a genetic condition that strips their fur of the orange pigment, leaving the animal with snow white fur, black stripes and blue eyes.

I truly hope the tigers are not considered at fault in this. It sickens me when wild animals are put down for attacking humans. Just release them back into their natural habitat, they are clearly not at all tame and if the accounts are correct Nordin was suicidal anyway.

I dont think there is any suggestion of that.

Releasing them is hardly the answer either.

yeah Thormaturge are you on drugs or something?

This is not the west. Singapore zoo arent going to get rid of one of their best exhibits. They will probably get an award for getting rid of another mental Malaysian from Singapore

I hope the zoo can find another moron for the tigers to play with. You hear about this all the time. What a dope! Well, the tigers are happy. Feed his remains to that crocodile.

The tigers are a main attraction and have humans with them during show-times without incidents.
The tigers obviously felt threatened by the guy's behaviour . . . and attacked, a normal defensive reaction.

I doubt they'll be out down.

i think the tigers will have to be retrained.. maybe made to paint pictures or play socc..err football, maybe dance to keep the tourists satisfied, or maybe this could be a whole new gimmick, come and see the tigers taken to the cleaners..

That's the legacy of Steve Irwin for you. The croc was probably expecting a good wrestle and a slot on Australian TV.
