    SOUTHERN VIOLENCE

Insurgents steal head of decapitated victim
    Wednesday September 10, 2008

Police inspect the scene where Atthapol Konlom, assistant chief to the Sadawa tambon administration organisation in Pattani's Yarang district, was shot dead yesterday morning before being decapitated. The headless body of the victim was found near his pick-up truck.

A community leader was decapitated after he was shot dead in Pattani's Yarang district yesterday morning.

Atthapol Konlom , 26, assistant chief to Sadawa tambon administration organisation in Yarang district, was ambushed in front of Ebu school in the same district at around 10am.

After the killing, the attackers dragged him from his pick-up truck before beheading him. They fled on motorcycles with the victim's head, said police.

In Yala, a ranger volunteer was killed and another wounded when a group of unknown armed men attacked their base in the compound of Banglang school in Bannang Sata district on Monday night.

The fleeing attackers threw spikes on the road to delay police pursuit.

The dead ranger was identified as Rusadee Da-or, 21, and the wounded volunteer was Veera Saengchan, 31.

Police yesterday inspected the scene of the attack and found several weapons had been taken by the attackers.

The stolen items included six AK-47 assault rifles, one M16 assault rifle, one 9mm pistol, four bulletproof vests and at least 600 rounds of ammunition.

About 50 attackers were believed to have carried out the assault on the base.

Yala police chief Pol Maj-Gen Sayant Krasaesaen ordered all police stations in this southernmost province to increase security and set up vehicle checkpoints on the roads.

Police teams providing protection for teachers have also been ordered to tighten security measures.

The cabinet yesterday approved a two-year occupational training project for youths considered at risk of being lured into insurgency

The project, proposed by the Internal Security Operations Command, is aimed at providing occupational training for 300,000 youths living in Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat provinces to prevent them from joining insurgent movements, said deputy government spokesman Natthawut Saikua.

Some 500 million baht budget will be allocated to the scheme each year, starting from this year.
